Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust has a exciting position of Clinical Fellow Ophthalmologist  with an interest in Surgical Retina post available within their Ophthalmology Department.

This post is based at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (Stoke Mandeville, Wycombe General and Amersham Hospitals in Buckinghamshire) and is a Fixed Term post for 12 months with the possibility to extend. This post is available to start from April 2026.

This is a Fixed term contract post, it does not qualify for pay protection or re-location expenses.

Main duties of the job

A fellow post in the sub-specialty of Retina, with the focus on retina is available at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS. This post is based at Buckinghamshire Hospitals NHS Trust (Stoke Mandeville, Wycombe

The successful applicant will have training in the clinical management of Medical retina, Uveitis and Surgical retina patients with clinical work-up and decision making in the out-patient setting, AMD one stop clinics and laser clinics, and cataract or VR surgery depending on level of skill and interest.

The post-holder may also be able to undertake occasional additional cataract lists.

Research and audit are actively encouraged.

Supervision of junior trainees may be required depending on experience.

Successful applicants will have a personal development plan agreed between the post holder and the Retinal Service Lead Consultants. Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust is happy to support appropriate assessment of Fellows as required, with Workplace Based Assessments. Scope exists for the development of complementary sub-specialty interests.

Buckinghamshire Healthcare Trust has a dynamic cataract service. Successful applicants will be expected to embrace all aspects of retinal service delivery. This will include clinical, administrative, education and research and development roles.

As part of the wider ophthalmology service they will also work within Eye Casualty on a rotating basis.

Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • MB,BS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MRCOphth or FRCOphth Part 1 or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in training grades in ophthalmology
  • Ability to take an ophthalmic history, perform an ophthalmic examination, request and interpret common ophthalmic investigations and formulate a clinical management plan without immediate supervision.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience as SpR or equivalent
  • Competent to undertake phacoemulsification independently.
  • Competent to administer intravitreal injections
  • Competent to perform laser retinal photocoagulation.

Skills, Knowledge and Personal

Essential criteria
  • Good personal organisation and time management skills.
  • Good personal and interpersonal skills
  • Good spoken and written English
  • Communication skills should be highly developed.
  • Basic computer literacy and keyboard skills
  • Experience of clinical audit
Desirable criteria
  • Practical experience of clinical administration (eg responsibility for duty rota)
  • Management training and experience
  • Communication skills training
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office applications (or equivalent)
  • Experience of teaching doctors-in-training and undergraduates

Other Requirements

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration. Membership of a medical defence body.
  • Ability to travel between multiple hospital sites
