Job overview
Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with Special Interest in Retina
We are seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with a subspecialty interest in Retina and Vitreoretinal Surgery on a fixed-term basis for 12 months, to cover a planned career break.
The dates of the fixed term post would be 20 October 2025 to 19 October 2026.
The successful candidate will also provide, along with the other Consultants in the Unit, a general Ophthalmology service, the exact nature of which will depend on the skills of the successful candidate.
This post is based across our sites at Stoke Mandeville , Wycombe and Amersham Hospitals.
Applicants should be on the GMC Specialist Register. It is Trust policy that without CCT, an offer as Locum Consultant can be given for a 6 months fixed term contract, with possibility of it being extended for a further 6 months, but cannot go over 12 months in total.
Main duties of the job
The key duties and responsibilities are: -
· General Ophthalmology responsibilities including on call
· Specialist medical and surgical retina services
· Outpatient clinics at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Wycombe/Amersham General Hospital
· Operating
· Teaching
· Other care of inpatients or outpatients
· Clinical and other administration as required by agreement
· Teaching and training of junior staff and undergraduates
· Participation in Clinical Governance
· Service development

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- MB, BS or equivalent GMC registrable qualifications
- General training in Ophthalmology to CCT / CESR level
- Recognised Higher degree
- Recognised Fellowship (level 4 training) in retinal surgery
Experience
Essential criteria
- Appropriate training in Ophthalmology with additional training in retinal surgery to specialist level
- Experience of management and delivery of high-volume low-complexity cataract surgery
- Evidence of executive decision-making at consultant level
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Excellent leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills to undertake effectively the role of consultant
- Evidence for surgical and clinical skills in Ophthalmic surgery to undertake a consultant role
- Good personal and interpersonal skills
- Good spoken and written English
- Communication skills should be highly developed
- Experience of teaching doctors-in-training and undergraduates
- Experience of clinical audit
