Job overview
The cardiology department is based predominantly at Wycombe Hospital, but also provides a service at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, together with in reach to general medical and surgical inpatients with secondary cardiac problems. At Wycombe Hospital we have a 22 bedded coronary care unit, and an 8 bedded Cardiac and Stroke Receiving Unit with a further 4 bedded escalation area. The non-invasive physiology services consist of an investigations unit, performing ambulatory ECG’s, Alivecor, exercise tests, ambulatory BP, tilt table and device interrogation (ILR, brady and complex). Non-invasive imaging services consist of transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, including 3D echo, CT coronary angiography and Cardiac Magnetic resonance imaging. The invasive services, provided via two cardiac catheter laboratories, include invasive coronary angiography, and percutaneous cardiovascular interventions, including primary angioplasty (0800-1800), pacing, loop recorders and complex device implantation. We also have an accredited cardiac rehabilitation unit.
Main duties of the job
· The consultant will be expected to provide support and leadership for the department in cross sectional imaging and support for echocardiography.
· The consultant will be expected to see 10 new patients per outpatient clinic initially including 3 hot slots.
· The consultant will be expected to participate in a consultant of the week rota
· The consultant will have educational duties including supporting resident doctors.
· The consultant will have electronic referral service duties (advice and guidance)
· The on-call rota is 1:8 with internal cover starting at 1800-0800. The expectation is that the consultant should be available to provide telephone advice and to return to the hospital within 40 minutes if required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
· Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of cardiology patients.
· To share with colleagues the responsibilities for the day-to-day management of cardiology inpatients and outpatients.
· Teaching and training of junior staff
· To actively participate in both departmental and trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit
To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing professional development (CPD)
Person specification
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent.
- Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
- MRCP
- If an applicant is UK trained, they must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Cardiology or have a proposed date of CCT within 6 months of the interview. If an applicant is non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence equivalent to the UK CCT.
EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- Sufficient to have achieved higher accreditation.
- CMR and CT (L3 at least one modality)
- TTE (BSE) and TOE
- General cardiology outpatient management.
- Acute cardiology (excluding primary PCI/complex intervention)
CLINICAL AND TECHNICAL SKILLS
Essential criteria
- Thorough knowledge of specialty and ability to work at consultant level
- Has participated in audit
- Ability to take appropriate initiative in relation to all aspects of consultant role.
- Ability to manage own workload, time and supporting staff.
LEADING AND MANAGING
Essential criteria
- Supervision of an imaging multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to the speciality.
COMMUNICATION AND INFLUENCING
Essential criteria
- Good command of spoken and written English.
- Ability to communicate information effectively to colleagues and patients.
- Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
TEAM WORKING
Essential criteria
- Evidence of and ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Essential criteria
- Valid driving licence. Enhanced DBS check.
- Evidence of formal and informal contributions to teaching and training

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
