CT Advanced Radiographer 

Department: Imaging

Band 7 £47,810 - £54,710 per annum (pro rata if Part-Time)

Full-time 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working.

Are you looking to join an expanding Imaging Department and contribute to the growth of the CT service? Are you a proactive team member looking to develop clinical skills and knowledge whilst honing your leadership qualities?

Applications are invited from enthusiastic and self-motivated radiographers who are specialists in CT with extensive experience in this modality. A commitment to excellent patient care and a desire to develop is essential to complement our highly motivated, multi-disciplinary team of clinical and non-clinical staff at MKUH. As part of our vibrant, friendly and inclusive team, you will be based in the CT department, which currently consists of 3 Canon scanners. There is also a new Imaging Scanning Centre due for completion in Spring 2026.

Main duties of the job

You will undertake a wide range of examinations including cardiac CT, CT colonography, biopsies and interventional procedures, emergency scans and outpatient services. You will also contribute to coordinating the inpatient & ED workload, supporting radiographer-led vetting of CT requests as well as assisting in implementing development and progression of CT service. There will be a commitment to the out-of-hours service which will involve some general radiography.

As a vital team member, you will contribute to delivering a proactive, first-class diagnostic service, ensuring exceptional patient care aligned with the Trust's core values, whilst upholding high clinical standards. You will be expected to undertake the role of mentor for junior staff and learners, as well as demonstrating leadership qualities and taking on responsibility for the service when required. Our department currently supports students from the University of Herefordshire and apprentice radiographers studying at the University of Exeter.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Essential qualifications include excellent communication and organisational skills, a dedication to CPD and practical knowledge of radiation protection, legislation and health & safety requirements. Flexibility in your approach to work is essential, with an unwavering commitment to keeping patients at the forefront of your practice.

  • To independently undertake a wide range of CT procedures, ensuring high professional standards of technical competence and patient care are maintained at all times.
  • Able to work in an advanced practitioner capacity, with a high degree of autonomy to provide clinical support and advice to other radiographic practitioners.
  • In complex and challenging clinical situations, uses a range of skills and strategies to deal with the issues presented and to lead new practice and service developments.
  • To aid patient management outcomes and better interpretation and reporting of CT examinations; the post holder should possess an increased curiosity and ability to problem solve as well as advanced technical and clinical decision-making skill sets. At an advanced practitioner level, this should be demonstrated through the consistent promotion of critical thinking by analysing, evaluating, and synthesizing evidence-based information sources.

Qualifications and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography, DCR(D) Diploma of the College of Radiographers or equivalent
  • Post graduate qualification in CT imaging
  • Health and Care Professions Council Registration
  • Evidence of a sound level of computer literacy (MS Teams, word, outlook, power point and excel)
  • Familiarity with hospital information systems (HIS), radiology information systems (RIS) and picture archiving communications systems (PACS)
  • Good understanding of health and safety requirements
  • Sound awareness of data protection, freedom of information and confidentiality issues within NHS
  • Evidence of keeping informed of the current CT imaging techniques & practices via short courses & study days to underpin knowledge development.
  • Knowledge of relevant national imaging standards (e.g., IR(ME)R 2017, IRR ’17 and associated codes of practice)
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate qualification in CT imaging

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of an extensive range of CT procedures, including use of multi-slice CT.
  • Minimum of 5 years post qualification experience
  • Wide range of General Radiographic experience since graduation.
  • Experience of taking responsibility for the successful training of a team of radiographers within CT.
  • Experience of the clinical management of a CT Service.
  • Experience of dealing with breakdowns and taking remedial action within CT.
