Job overview
All Medical and Dental Staff employed by the Trust are expected to comply with hospital health and safety policies, clinical governance and other risk management policies. The successful candidate will be responsible to, and work under the supervision of the 5 Consultant Ophthalmologists. The post will provide extensive experience in the management of general ophthalmic problems. The ideal candidate will have some experience in the management of general ophthalmic problems. He/she will be expected to actively participate in all audit projects within the department. The post holder will be required to take part in an on-call rota and will participate in evening clinics with booked urgent patients. As a department we are keen to develop our doctors encouraging their own professional development and goals. Please note: This post is non-residential, but accommodation is subject to availability for which there will be a charge. He/she will also be involved in the supervision and training of junior doctors and Medical Students within the hospital. There is a regular Medical Student Teaching commitment, and the successful candidate will be expected to have an interest in undergraduate teaching.
Main duties of the job
The newly appointed Speciality Doctor will have a job plan based on 10 Programme Activities (PAs). The allocated PAs will be formed by a flexible combination of elective operating lists, outpatient clinics and ward rounds and on-call duties in the future. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities: Clinical: The post holder will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the provision of ophthalmic services within the ophthalmology department at MKUH including: (a) Diagnosis and treatment of patients in the medical retina and vitreo-retinal clinics. (b) Treatment of patients using laser procedures. (c) Treatment of patients with intravitreal injection. i.e., age-related macular degeneration (d) To manage acute ophthalmic conditions in BUS (Booked urgent service clinics) (e) To diagnose and treatment General ophthalmic conditions. (f) To provide cover for clinics where there is a clinical need.

Qualifications / Experience
Essential criteria
- Basic Medical Qualifications
- Membership of Royal College of Ophthalmology
- Ability to carry out intravitreal injections
- Ability to carry out YAG and Argon laser treatments independently
- Demonstratable post graduate experience with within Ophthalmology
- Ability to practice independently
- Experience of working in Eye Casualty
Desirable criteria
- Fellowship in Ophthalmology from one of the Royal Colleges
- Microsurgical experience
- Ability to operate unsupervised
- Ability to perform cataract surgery
- Ability to carry out FFA
- Evidence of acquired skills
