As a Respiratory Consultant you will
• Work with the existing team to provide a 7-day service (incl On Calls)
• Provide expert clinical care for inpatients and outpatients (diagnosis, treatment and aftercare)
• Lead/develop specialist respiratory services
• Collaborate with a team of consultants, nurses, physiotherapists, and allied health professionals.
• Contribute to teaching, training, and research initiatives within the department
• Lead/contribute to the development of the Virtual Respiratory Ward

Main duties of the job
- Provide acute and elective care for Respiratory and General (Internal) Medicine patients, including the provision of a Respiratory in-reach service, triage of referrals from Primary Care and response to Advice & Guidance requests from GPs
- Participate in Ward/Board Rounds daily
- Take responsibility for management of adult Respiratory and General (Internal) Medicine patients in conjunction with community services and the regional centres.
- Improve the flow of patients at MKUH by regular liaison with the physicians, facilitating investigations including imaging, Physiology, and the appropriate management of Respiratory referrals.
- Support with service developments and improvements to allow the service to continue to grow and meet the needs of the growing local population.
- Support and ensure Governance within the service to ensure patient safety is maintained and incidents are raised early and investigated properly.
- Build strong working relationships with fellow colleagues, operations managers, patient pathway coordinators and other teams across the Trust.

- Maintain a high standard of work and look to continuously improve their practice to ensure patient safety and experience.
- Support the training, professional supervision and management of trainee medical staff/students

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You will join a team of 6x Consultants, 1x Associate Specialist and 2x Speciality Doctors who have an interest in General Respiratory Medicine, Sleep and Lung Cancer.
The wider team is supported by a team of Resident Doctors, MTI, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Respiratory Physiologists and a Physiotherapist.
There is a dedicated visiting Thoracic Surgeon from Harefield Hospital; we have Oncology and Palliative Care support based locally; and excellent links for tertiary care with Oxford, Papworth and The Brompton Hospital.
The Cancer Centre at Milton Keynes University Hospital is expanding. We provide on-site radiotherapy. We envisage a rapid expansion of the services we provide regionally. We have successfully initiated Targeted Lung Health Check cancer screening services and are looking to bolster our diagnostics, including the development of navigational Bronchoscopy services.
We have a mature Sleep Service and initiate non-invasive domiciliary ventilation in partnership with the Oxford Sleep & Ventilation Service.
You will be expected to provide specialist respiratory consults in Acute Medicine, Critical Care and in other specialties.
An interest in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and delivery of undergraduate curriculum for University of Buckingham Medical School will be expected, encouraged and duly supported through SPA activity.

Qualifications/Registration
Essential criteria
- Medical degree MRCP(UK) diploma or equivalent
- Full GMC registration and Specialist Registration
Desirable criteria
- Accreditation in General (internal) Medicine and Respiratory Care
- Higher medical degree (MD/PhD)
Experience/Training
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 7 years postgraduate experience, including higher medical training – 5 years as a specialist registrar or senior registrar. Part of this period may be in a post of equivalent responsibility and training potential
Desirable criteria
- Special interest in Medical Education
- Research background
- Experience in leading Virtual Ward activities
- Skilled in Bronchoscopy, EBUS and Pleural Procedures
Clinical knowledge and skills

- Broad experience in all aspects of Respiratory and General (Internal) medicine, Cancer 2WW and Sleep Medicine
- Evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems
- Ability to prioritise clinical need

- Breadth of experience within and outside speciality
Teaching and training skills

- Evidence of contributions to teaching and training of undergraduates and postgraduates
- Evidence of ability to motivate and develop both medical and non-medical staff
