Senior Clinical Fellow in Transplant and Cardiac Anaesthesia

NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

Job overview

Applications are invited for a Subspecialty Senior Clinical Fellowship programme in Transplant and Cardiac Anaesthesia. This is a dual fellowship with Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) and Royal Papworth Hospital (RPH).

This post is to start from 04 February 2026 for a period of 12 months.

The Senior Clinical Fellow post would suit applicants who have completed or nearly completed a recognised anaesthetic specialist training program, including someone who already possesses a CCT in Anaesthesia. The posts offer the opportunity to increase general anaesthetic experience prior to taking up a consultant post and also to develop or further an interest in a subspecialty of Anaesthesia.

Main duties of the job

The Combined Liver and Cardiac Fellowship has been developed for anaesthetists with a special interest in liver transplant, hepatobiliary surgery as well as adult cardiothoracic anaesthesia and critical care (including focus ultrasounds examinations and perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography).

The appointed candidates will spend their first six months in either CUH or RPH and swap at the end of their rotation period.

Please note - due to the two hospitals being under different Trust the time spent in each institution must be compacted over six months.

A Senior Clinical Fellow will be effectively working at Junior Consultant level with Senior Consultant support and distant supervision available at all times. Senior Clinical Fellows participate in a non-resident on call rota.

Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at time of commencement is required.

Please note that these posts do not carry Postgraduate Dean’s approval or training recognition.

Working for our organisation

The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.

Applications from job seekers who require skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.

It is a requirement for skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, to present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Adult dependants (over 18 years old) will also be subject to this requirement.

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an Equal Opportunities Employer.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Please note that the fellowship will start for the first 6 months in one Trust and rotate over to the next Trust for the remaining months.

The pay is set by the two different Trusts therefore the payment might differ during the two 6 months block but you will receive the same pay over the year regardless of which hospital they start in.

This is not a recognised training post and some service provision will be required.

Please refer to the job description and person specification attached for further details on the main responsibilities and duties for this post.
