Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant in Breast Surgery (10PAs) at Cambridge Breast Unit, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH).

This post is to commence as soon as possible for a period of 6 months. 

Main duties of the job

This post offers the opportunity to join the Breast Surgery team at CUH as a Consultant in Breast Surgery (10PAs), contributing to the delivery of a comprehensive, high-quality breast service.  

The role includes responsibility, with consultant colleagues, for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast disease, including assessment in one-stop clinics, interpretation of imaging and biopsy results, and delivery of evidence-based operative and non-operative care. 

The successful candidate will participate actively in multidisciplinary team decision making and contribute to the planning and delivery of surgical treatment, including oncological +/- oncoplastic procedures, in accordance with national and international guidelines and best practice standards. 

The post holder will contribute to clinical governance, audit and teaching while demonstrating professionalism, leadership and commitment to efficient use of resources. 

You will be fully registered with the GMC and ideally have a CCT in General surgery or be within six months of award of CCT at the time of interview. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will join the Breast Surgery team at Cambridge University Hospitals and contribute to the delivery of a high-quality, patient-centred breast service. Working collaboratively with consultant colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will be expected to maintain the highest clinical standards in the assessment and management of patients with breast disease, ensuring that care is delivered in line with current national and international evidence-based guidelines and recognised best practice.

A strong commitment to safe, reliable and consistent clinical practice is essential. The post holder will be expected to demonstrate sound clinical judgement, clear communication with patients and colleagues, and careful decision making in both elective and urgent clinical situations. An important aspect of the role is the ability to recognise limits of practice and to seek appropriate advice or support when required, ensuring that patient safety and quality of care remain paramount at all times.

The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues across the multidisciplinary team, including radiology, pathology, oncology, nursing and allied health professionals, contributing to collaborative decision making and coordinated patient management. They will support the delivery of efficient clinical pathways while maintaining a compassionate and patient-focused approach to care.

The post holder will contribute to maintaining and improving standards within the department through participation in clinical governance, audit and quality improvement activities. This includes engagement with processes that monitor outcomes, support learning from clinical practice and ensure adherence to professional and organisational standards.

In addition, the role includes contributing to the educational environment of the department through supervision, support and teaching of resident medical staff and students where appropriate. The successful candidate will be expected to act professionally at all times, demonstrating reliability, integrity and respect for colleagues, patients and the wider healthcare team while working within Trust policies and professional guidance.
