Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Technician to join a dynamic multi-professional team at the Communication Aid Service East of England (CASEE).
This is a part time, permanent role. It offers the opportunity for an experienced Clinical Technician to work alongside the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) of Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, a Rehabilitation Engineer, Healthcare Scientist, an Advisory Teacher and Technicians, providing a highly specialist assessment and AAC provision service to eligible clients across the six counties of the East of England.
Ideally, you will be experienced in working with people with complex needs who require AAC to support their communication. You will be familiar with high level assessment, working as part of a multi-professional team and bringing your unique professional expertise to programme, create and customise a range of AAC solutions. You will also be confident in providing training to professionals and families and be able to communicate effectively with a broad range of individuals.
Whilst high level AAC skills and technical experience is desirable, we welcome applications from Clinical Technicians/Technologists who have an interest in Assistive Technology and/or AAC and who are committed to quickly develop the necessary specialist knowledge and skills.
Individual personal development needs will be identified and supported.
Main duties of the job
You will contribute to the provision of the Regional Specialised Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) services within the East of England; Communication Aid Service East of England (CASEE).
You will provide technical support services for communication aids for assessment or on loan to children and adults with complex disability and severe communication problems who need to use alternative and augmentative communication.
You will have specialised technical skills to set up, customise and maintain a wide range of communication aid equipment. Carry out scheduled preventative maintenance, servicing, repair, calibration, safety and acceptance testing.
You will be a member of the multi-disciplinary team working closely with other staff to ensure the equipment recommended gives the client the best technology available to meet their communication and physical needs.
Based at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, the post holder will travel out to clients, carers and staff, to client’s homes, educational or care settings to provide technical support around the East of England region.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc/BEng or Graduate Diploma in a relevant scientific or engineering subject, or equivalent. (Examples of Equivalence: HNC/HTEC/Foundation degree in engineering subject and relevant work experience)
- Eligible for membership of, and commitment to join, the Register of Clinical Technologists
- Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
- Membership of the Register of Clinical Technologists (IPEM)
- Qualifications in Rehabilitation Engineering, Assistive Technology, Windows Server 2003, IT Networking
- Successful completion of IEPM Clinical Technologists Training Scheme
- MSc in Assistive Technology or Rehabilitation Engineering.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Post graduate experience working in a clinical discipline delivering clinical technical services involving the application of electronic, electrical, mechanical or computer engineering skills.
- Experience of setting-up, maintaining and trouble-shooting computer-based systems.
- Experience of working with people with disabilities
Desirable criteria
- Specialist experience in use of equipment for clients requiring Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC)
- Specialist experience in setting-up, testing, carrying out maintenance and repairing AAC equipment
- Experience of working within a Quality Management System such as ISO9001:2008
- Experience of working with people with severe physical disabilities and life-limiting conditions

Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Working knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines. (E.g. IPEM and other guidelines)
- Understanding of the roles and responsibilities of other healthcare and education professionals and the principles of group working
- Practical computer, electronic, electrical and mechanical engineering knowledge, with particular strengths in computing
- Best practice in the management of quality and risk applied to the prescription, manufacture and maintenance of equipment to ensure safe efficient use of equipment
