An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Commissioning team as Assistant Director of Commercial Development & Contracting, to lead the development of commercial services at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH).

This is a high-profile role within the Trust, which involves the management of the Private and Overseas Patient team. You will have overall responsibility for all management activities relating to Private and Overseas Patients at CUH, including the strategic development of private patient services. 

You will also support the implementation of the Trust’s commercial strategy providing expertise and leadership on matters relating to commercial partnership opportunities with industry and spin-outs from CUH.

In addition, you will oversee other commercial contracts the Trust holds for the sale of its services within the Trust’s Commissioning Directorate.

The Assistant Director of Commercial Development & Contracting is accountable to the Deputy Director of Commissioning for the leadership, direction and financial control of all overseas and private patient activity and commercial business undertaken within CUH. 

You will work with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders and as such, the ability to build relationships, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively to resolve emergent operational and contractual issues are essential.

Main duties of the job

Direct management of the Private and Overseas Patient team and the associated budgets. Leading across a range of related disciplines including Finance, Commercial, Communications and Information Management to enable the delivery of these services.

Lead the development and delivery of a medium to long-term strategy for the growth of private patient activity.

Ensure that the annual business plan is prepared, approved and delivered in line with objectives, targets, standards and controls.

Lead on commercial contracting and relationships with private medical insurers and other funders of private healthcare.

Support the implementation of new business development opportunities, working closely with clinicians and departments as stakeholders.

Subject matter expertise on matters relating to commercial opportunities at the Trust, with a particular focus on private and overseas practice, as well as other commercial opportunities that leverage the Trust’s specific areas of clinical expertise. 

Take a leadership role in the expansion and delivery of the Trust’s private and overseas service offering, establishing excellent working relationships with consultants, senior managers and external stakeholders.

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent relevant management experience and exposure.
  • Evidence of continued professional development.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive commercial healthcare experience in an NHS or private environment acquired over a significant period. This knowledge and experience should extend across a broad range of disciplines (for instance, commercial, finance, information management, commissioning and communications) and to all aspects of managing private healthcare or other commercial activities, including financial management incorporating profit and loss accounting, performance management, information systems and staff management.
Desirable criteria
  • Significant experience in business management at a corporate level within a NHS or private healthcare organisation.
