Job overview

We are looking to recruit two full-time Senior Internal Communications and Engagement Officers to support the delivery of engaging and effective internal communications across CUH. Working closely with the Head and Deputy Head of Internal Communications, you will help deliver agreed plans and strategies, creating high-quality, creative content for a range of internal channels.

You will engage with staff across the organisation to identify compelling stories and case studies and advise colleagues at all levels, including senior leaders, on effective communication approaches. The role requires someone who can work autonomously, is highly organised, and has excellent interpersonal and writing skills, with the ability to communicate to a consistently high standard.

This is an exciting opportunity for confident communicators who enjoy building relationships and making a real impact through internal engagement.

Main duties of the job

The Internal Communications and Engagement Officer will support the Internal Communications and Engagement Manager in delivering agreed plans and strategies. This will include producing creative, high-quality content and engaging with staff across CUH, identifying case studies and content to be used in a variety of channels.

You will need to work autonomously, be highly organised, have great inter-personal skills, and be able to write and communicate to a very high standard. You will need to liaise with and advise all levels of staff on communications, including senior leaders.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level or having gained equivalent relevant experience and/or equivalent level of skills or experience plus training and/or experience in the communications field to degree-level equivalent.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
Desirable criteria
  • Either an under-graduate or post-graduate qualification in communications, journalism, marketing, public relations or related field.
  • Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing or Public Relations.
  • A post-graduate period of training in internal communications.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantive experience of developing and editing content for websites, intranets, newsletters and other digital channels.
  • Substantive experience of working within style and corporate identity guidelines.
  • Substantive experience of producing internal communications content.
  • Demonstrable experience of working on successful internal and/or external campaigns and projects linked to an organisation’s strategic aims and priorities.
  • Substantive experience of working with a wide range of people, from different backgrounds, of varying seniority – advising and influencing on communications content and channels.
  • Experience of managing and influencing stakeholders of varying levels of seniority.
  • Substantive experience of using website content management systems.
  • Experience of managing third party suppliers to deliver on time and on budget.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of developing internal communications channels for hard to reach audiences.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of health policies and the wider context in which the Trust operates.
  • Understanding of best practice with respect to implementing corporate identity guidelines and style guides in a complex organisation.
  • Knowledge of the techniques of stakeholder mapping, measurement and evaluation.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how messages land with different audiences and all levels of staff, and how to adjust approach accordingly.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent writing and keyboard skills with significant experience of drafting copy for a range of audiences.
  • Ability to process information in different formats (documents, publications, presentations) and interpret to the most appropriate format for internal communications, depending on audience.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and effectively to an excellent standard, whether orally or in writing.
  • A key eye for detail and excellent proof reading skills.
  • The ability to prioritise own work effectively and deal with conflicting demands.
  • The ability to develop strong interpersonal relationships and work with a range of individuals to motivate and inspire confidence and trust, including influencing and negotiating with senior leaders.
  • The ability to identify the target audience for any given communication, understand their needs, adapt writing styles to suit and develop copy with speed and accuracy.
  • The ability to take complex information and make it easy to understand, and accessible, for our audiences – this might be presented in a variety of ways; written copy, reports, presentations or infographics.
  • Judgement and influencing skills to ensure messages land well with audiences.
