Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic Clinical Scientist, Biomedical Scientist or Research Scientist with an interest in acquired/sporadic cancer genomics.  

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Cancer team of our Genomics Laboratory to perform a clinically transformative project on the analyses of sarcoma cancer genomes. This is a 2 Year fixed term post, funded by Sarcoma UK, and will include analyses of sarcoma whole genomes across the national Genomic Laboratory network.

The project PI is Professor Adrienne Flanagan, based at UCL Cancer Institute, and you will work closely with Adrienne in addition to other clinicians and scientists involved in sarcoma investigations

This post is hosted at the East Genomic Laboratory Hub, one of seven Hubs established to provide the new National Genomic Medicine Service. The post will be located at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which has a stong record in cancer WGS analysis for commissioned genomes and translational research.

You will aim to elevate and define best practice in the effective analysis of sarcoma whole genomes, by standardising and evolving analysis strategies and defining insightful analysis resource.

Individuals with a research background, NHS scientists and STPs in final year are encouraged to apply and would gain valuable education and experience in the analysis of cancer genomes within a clinical environment.

You must take up the post no later than September 30th 2024

Main duties of the job

  1. Analysis, interpretation and reporting of sarcoma cancer genomic test results
  2. Provide advice to clinicians and colleagues within the GLH network regarding sarcoma genomics
  3. Derive best practice strategies and resources to ensure sarcoma analyses are efficient and effective
  4. Work closely with Professor Flanagan and other engage with other GLHs to standardise analysis and reporting of sarcoma genomes.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First degree in an appropriate biological science or equivalent qualification
  • Completion of formal training programme in genomics, clinical molecular genetics, cytogenetics or cancer genetics OR Equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Part 1 examination for Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists
  • MSc / PhD in biological science
  • Registration as a Healthcare Scientist (Clinical Scientist or Biomedical Scientist) with the Health Care Professions Council

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant work experience in a Genetics laboratory
  • Analysing genomic data and reporting genomics tests
Desirable criteria
  • Research and Development relevant to genomic testing (molecular, cancer or cytogenetic)
  • Evidence of training and developing of colleagues

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to organise and manage complex activities while providing leadership to a small team within the department
  • Able to maintain intense concentration on important tasks for a sustained period of time despite frequent interruptions
  • Good verbal and written communication
  • Able to work part of a team and individually, with a commitment to teaching and training
  • Able to use and manipulate lab computer system and standard software packages
  • Ability to develop new protocols
  • Good knowledge of quality assurance and problem solving
Desirable criteria
  • To have developed practical ability in techniques used for the diagnosis of human genetic disorders
  • Able to conduct Research and Development activities
  • Able to prepare and present scientific and clinical information at meetings or conferences

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • To have a thorough knowledge of human molecular genetics, cytogenetics and/or cancer genetics
  • To have a good knowledge of analytical methods and processes used for the molecular and genomic diagnosis of cancer
  • To have a basic knowledge of typical laboratory operational procedures, quality management systems and problem solving techniques
Desirable criteria
  • To have detailed knowledge of a specific disease area applicable to genomics
  • Knowledge of the processes involved in examining solid cancer samples in a clinical laboratory
  • The National Genomic Test Directory and its implementation through Genomic Laboratory Hubs
