As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, you will play a pivotal role in the delivery of high-quality diagnostic services within our Haematology team.
You must have a relevant IBMS Specialist diploma or equivalent qualifications or equivalent experience. Applications may be accepted from HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists who are currently progressing through the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Haematology or Blood Science. Successful candidates that have not yet finished the portfolio will be paid on AfC Band 5 based on their experience at that grade, until completion and successful assessment and award of their qualification by the IBMS.
An on-site practical assessment will be required as part of the recruitment process and there is an expectation that the post holder will participate in the delivery of a 24/7 laboratory service.
Main duties of the job
- To perform the initial screening and further investigation of specialist diagnostic tests producing complex quality diagnostic results in order to aid patient treatment and care and authorise the results as directed by departmental procedures and guidelines.
- To use knowledge, interpretive skills, complex analysers and IT in order to deliver Blood sciences Service to our users.
- Supervises and/or trains less experienced staff in own area of work and competency.
- To maintain competence through CPD.
- To work flexibly in reflection of service needs which may include an extended working day and/or participation in delivery of a 24 hour, 7 day per week service.
- Maintain and promote professional image of both Pathology and CUH Trust.
- To work safely as the job entails coming into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals. This may include blood, pus, urine, faeces, and respiratory secretions.
NB: Post holder must not work outside their defined field of competence

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist
- Biomedical Science Degree or Equivalent
- IBMS Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline or equivalent qualification. (applicants working towards this may still be considered)
- Evidence of CPD
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial practical experience of working in a Blood Sciences laboratory within a healthcare setting.
- Experience of operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting specialist automated and semi-automated laboratory equipment
- Experience of Pathology IT systems.
- Experience of Quality Management Systems.
- Experience of writing laboratory SOPs
- Experience of training and competency assessment
- Experience of performing Risk Assessments.
Desirable criteria
- European Computer Driving Licence or equivalent
- Previous relevant experience of working in the NHS
- Previous experience of line managing staff
- Experience of mentoring staff undertaking IBMS training programmes e.g. Registration or specialist portfolio
- Experience of incident reporting and/or investigation
- Participation in change control, validation/verification.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable knowledge of the clinical reason for performing and technical understanding of Blood science tests equivalent to that covered by the IBMS Specialist Portfolio.
- Understands clinical significance of patient test results and when to action abnormal/unexpected results.
- Knowledge of sources of interference and analytical variables
- Knowledge of IQC procedures and EQA schemes
- Knowledge of relevant quality standards, regulations, and clinical guidelines e.g. ISO15189, HASAW, BSH
