Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a registered or nearly registered clinical scientist to join our team in the Clinical Biochemistry laboratory at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust for a period of 12 months. The Clinical Biochemistry laboratories at CUH provide routine and endocrine specialist services both locally and nationally and the successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop skills in specialist endocrine services as well as gain experience of a fast moving automated laboratory. The will be supported to complete STP training and/or to study for FRCPath part one (as appropriate).
Main duties of the job
To provide professional advice to medical staff and other healthcare professionals on the selection of laboratory tests and their interpretation taking into account the particular clinical situation.
To contribute to the development and selection of analytical methods and equipment employed.
To be actively involved in maintaining the standards required for laboratory accreditation under UKAS.
Undertake research and development directed towards biochemical problems in clinical medicine as agreed between the post-holder and the Clinical Biochemistry Clinical Lead.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Honours degree in relevant science
- MSc in Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent
- Registered or soon to be registered as a Clinical Scientist with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
Desirable criteria
- Part 1 Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists
- Research training and experience to PhD level or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of duty biochemist, including result interpretation and authorisation
- Experience of laboratory information systems
- Experience of research, development and audits
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Detailed scientific knowledge of human biochemistry and chemistry, including metabolic processes, physiology and drug interferences
- Knowledge of biochemical diagnoses and monitoring of disease
- Knowledge of routine and specialised analytical methods, quality assurance and problem solving
- Thorough knowledge of PC packages for word processing, presentations, spreadsheets and databases
- Knowledge of managerial processes within the NHS
- Awareness of quality management and accreditation
