Deputy Claims and Inquest Manager

Band 7

Job overview

The Trust is undertaking a significant programme of work following concerns raised about the practice of a Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in children.

The primary aim of the programme is to identify and address instances of harm to patients, and to ensure open, sensitive and timely communication with affected patients and their families.

Areas of focus within the programme include:

  • Commissioning an independent clinical review of approximately 700 elective cases and 100 trauma cases

  • Commissioning an independent review of whether lessons can be learned from an earlier report in 2016

  • Liaising with patients and their families sensitively and transparently and creating channels for questions and concerns to be raised.

This programme involves a number of different clinical and non-clinical staff groups across the hospital working together on the areas of focus above, as well as significant interaction with external bodies, often under time pressure.

Main duties of the job

To deputise for the Medico-Legal Manager in their absence and assist with complex patients and the process for making applications to the Court of Protection.

To ensure the timely provision of all information required by Coroners for Inquests involving Trust patients, to provide support to staff involved in this process and to represent the Trust at Inquest hearings.

To be responsible for the effective investigation and management of clinical negligence and personal injury claims against the Trust in conjunction with NHS Resolution.

Support the Trusts governance structure alignment in learning from themes and outcomes of Inquests and non-clinical claims.

Provide detailed reports on Inquests, claims and litigation matters.

To provide training and guidance on legal matters.
