Job overview
The post holder will lead the delivery of a comprehensive maintenance, repair, and technical support service for radiotherapy equipment managed by Medical Physics.
Main duties of the job
Radiotherapy Physics (part of the Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering) provides a comprehensive Physics service to Addenbrooke's Oncology Centre, ensuring the safe and accurate use of high-dose ionising radiation to treat patients with cancer whilst maintaining a safe environment for other patients, visitors and staff.
Our physicists, technicians and radiographers work closely with Oncology staff to provide a wide range of scientific and technical advice and support for all radiotherapy treatments. Routine clinical work includes radiotherapy treatment planning and related dosimetry, the provision of brachytherapy, and the manufacture of immobilisation and shielding equipment for patients. Extensive support is provided to radiotherapy equipment. This incorporates the design of facilities; the management of computer systems, the design and management of software; and the commissioning, servicing and quality control of Linear Accelerators, Orthovoltage units, Brachytherapy units and CT-simulators. All work and related dosimetry are monitored and assured to nationally and internationally agreed specifications and legal requirements.
We are also responsible for providing radiotherapy physics advice and support to two University Departments (Veterinary Medicine and Pathology).

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- 1. Relevant degree, or equivalent specialist knowledge acquired through a combination of HNC/HND-level education, extensive specialist training and substantial experience in radiotherapy engineering or complex medical-equipment maintenance.
- 2. Highly developed specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of radiotherapy equipment engineering, together with service-management knowledge, equivalent to master’s degree level.
- 3. Evidence of advanced manufacturer training in the maintenance, diagnosis and repair of linear accelerators and associated radiotherapy systems.
- 4. Evidence of continuing professional development across radiotherapy technology, clinical risk, quality management, equipment governance and technical-service leadership.
Desirable criteria
- Management diploma or equivalent
- Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. IPEM, IET, IMechE, InstMC).
Experience
Essential criteria
- 1. Significant experience in the maintenance and repair of complex medical, scientific or radiotherapy equipment.
- 2. Experience of advanced fault finding and diagnosis on complex systems.
- 3. Experience of planning and coordinating preventative maintenance programmes.
- 4. Attendance on a linac manufacture’s maintenance course.
- 5. Substantial experience of leading and managing a specialist technical team, including recruitment experience, allocating work, managing competence and performance, supporting staff development and maintaining service delivery.
Desirable criteria
- 1. Experience of supporting equipment procurement and commissioning projects.
- 2. Experience of working within a radiotherapy physics service.

Knowledge
Essential criteria
- 1. Detailed knowledge of linear accelerators and associated radiotherapy equipment.

- 3. High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure.
- 4. Good understanding of quality management systems, risk management and governance.
