Main duties of the job

The Pharmacy Support Worker carries out duties in support of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians and also carries out general and administrative duties within the dispensary.

Dispensing of medicines for inpatients and outpatients including use of the pharmacy labelling and stock control computer system.

All duties will be in accordance with Trust and departmental policies and procedures.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Please refer to the attached job description and person specification for full details of responsibilities.

1. To participate in the day to work of the mental health unit dispensary, providing quality, accurate dispensing.
2. To participate in the supply of medicines in the form of in and out-patient dispensing, including accurate prescription receipt, labelling and assembly, and ensuring prompt completion and distribution, in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
3. Contributing to the smooth running of the clozapine service.
4. Ordering of stock medication for wards and distribution of medicines to the wards.
5. Maintaining working stock levels of pharmaceuticals and other items, including bottles and consumables in the dispensary.
6. Participating in the stock control process including stock checking, receipt and storage of medicines and other items.
7. Processing the disposal of stock returned from wards and departments.
8. Performing general housekeeping duties to maintain the dispensary environment to the standards required.
9. Communicating with service users, carers and members of staff at the pharmacy hatch and telephone about the availability of medicines and other issues.

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE or equivalent

Experience

  • Previous pharmacy related employment within community or hospital

  • Good communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to plan own work and tasks within time available.
