Job overview
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Band 7 Mental Health Physiotherapy Lead to provide clinical leadership across our inpatient services for Older Adults, Adults, and Specialist Directorates. This role is ideal for a highly motivated physiotherapist who thrives in a fast‑paced multidisciplinary environment and is passionate about delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care.
You will lead and support physiotherapy teams across a diverse range of mental health inpatient wards, ensuring excellent clinical standards, effective service delivery, and a culture of continuous improvement. The postholder will play a key role in shaping service development, supporting workforce growth, and driving innovation in rehabilitation pathways, promoting the role of physiotherapy within mental health settings and a driving a holistic approach to patient care.
Main duties of the job
- To be the lead for the Mental Health Physiotherapy Team within the Trust.
- To set and provide a high standard of specialist physiotherapy assessment, treatment and advice to patients with mental health needs, carers and families. Undertaking the lead role in the assessment, diagnosis and formulation of physiotherapy treatment plans.
- To provide clinical and operational supervision, and act as a source of specialist advice and education to physiotherapists, technical instructors and assistants, as well as the wider multi-disciplinary team.
- To lead on, and co-ordinate, opportunities for service review and development within the team.

- To be responsible for own practice and accountable for all aspects of
physiotherapy treatment and care delivered to the patient. - To undertake highly specialised physiotherapy assessment and treatment as an autonomous practitioner.
- To assess, diagnose and develop individual care/treatment plans for a range of adult/older people conditions, some of which will be highly complex or will be for patients with complex clinical, social and psychiatric needs. This frequently involves the use of manual physiotherapy skills and therapeutic exercise interventions.
- To be responsible for reassessing patient care as treatment progresses and alter treatment programmes using knowledge and skills underpinned by clinical experience and best practice.
- Keep the patients at the centre of care, collaborating in decision making.
- Be able to analyse clinical and social information from a range of sources and integrate into physiotherapy assessment and development of care/treatment plan.
- Be able to motivate and encourage patients of all ages with a range of complex conditions / disabilities to work with treatment programmes and work towards treatment goals.

Person specification
Education / Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Degree or equivalent, e.g., BSc, MSc, or Diploma entry level qualification into the Physiotherapy profession.
- Current HCPC registration
- Professional knowledge and training to master’s level or equivalent experience
- Management/Leadership qualification and experience.
Desirable criteria
- Member of CSP
- Member of the Chartered Physiotherapists in Mental Healthcare (CPMH)
- Therapeutic exercise qualification, e.g. Pilates/Yoga
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working alongside people with complex mental health conditions
- Experience of health promotion and the inclusion of physiotherapy in mental healthcare.
- Experience of team leadership within physiotherapy
- Advanced understanding of clinical conditions and clinical experience in managing complex mental health presentations.
