Job overview

You will work together with the Darwin Nursery and Farm Shop Team. Darwin Nurseries and farm shop is a therapeutic horticultural and retail workplace where adults with learning disabilities and mental health challenges can develop skills in horticulture, retail and animal husbandry.

The Saturday Farm Shop Assistant will work in a busy farm shop selling fruit and vegetables, plants and garden sundries. 

Main duties of the job

The Saturday Farm Shop assistant will be responsible for ensuring the farm shop, cafe and plant nursery are maintained to a high standard. Customer service and cash handling will be an essential part of the role. 

Stock control, presentation and maintaining health and safety on the site is required, as well as the ability to maintain site security.

  • To work according to the Trust values.
  • To maintain good customer practice.
  • Order stock, receive and check deliveries as directed by the lead person. Price goods and display them.
  • Follow instructions from farm shop manager with regard to daily jobs and routines.
  • Ensure café area is prepared for service, maintain good hygiene standards and maintain stock levels.
  • Feed and care for animals, maintaining strong animal husbandry standards and security.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of market and current issues.
  • Ensure shop, café and storage areas are clean, tidy and presentable.
  • Maintain health and safety and meet all relevant legislation – COSHH, Trading Standards, Environmental Health.
  • Maintain security.
  • Cashing up, banking and general administrative duties are undertaken.
  • To maintain quality at all times and contribute towards the development and implementation of quality standards.
  • To work alongside volunteers, students and student tutors.
  • To contribute to team meetings.
  • To promote a positive image of the service.
  • To ensure that up to date and accurate records are kept.
  • To have a personal development plan and to attend and participate in training.
  • To communicate effectively with service users, colleagues, families and the general public.
  • To maintain confidentiality at all times.
