Job overview
As the Principal Analyst, the post holder will work as part of a dynamic team in delivering an effective service supporting managers and staff across the Cancer Alliance to use data, analysis and intelligence to drive improved outcomes and support quality improvement in
complex pathways of care.
The postholder will develop, design and deliver research and analysis using robust statistical methods on behalf of the Cancer Alliance and region.
The post is responsible for providing professional expertise to the outcome of the business processes for the Department or Directorate.
The focus of this role will be working within a wider Data & Performance Improvement team to lead the provision of research methods, statistical testing and project development across the cancer pathway including, but not limited to: earlier diagnosis, inequalities, variation and survival.
The priorities in the overall Cancer Alliance work programme will vary from time to time and, as such, the precise duties and projects associated with individual posts may also
vary.
Main duties of the job
• As a senior lead working internally and externally to deliver projects, initiatives and services to time and in a cost effective way.
• To support the identification and sharing of best practice in [discipline] to support service improvement.
• To operate in a highly political and sensitive environment.
• Support the portfolio of programmes/projects in demonstrating value for money tracking, managing and delivering agreed benefits.
• Provide specialist advice and prepare strategic reports and briefings for directors and stakeholders.
• In depth analysis, interpretation and production of complex and multiple reports.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Educated to Masters level or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in specialist area.
- Postgraduate qualification in statistics, research methods, public health or related field, or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
- Member of relevant professional body
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial experience of data analysis in either the public health, health care or cancer field, working at a senior level
- Understanding of a range of analytical techniques, and their application to the NHS context.
- Experience of applying analysis to reflect implementation of policy at national and subnational level.
- Extensive knowledge of specialist areas acquired through post graduate diploma or equivalent experience or training plus further specialist knowledge or experience to master’s level equivalent.
Skills
Essential criteria
- Substantial working knowledge of statistical methods applied to health care data including benchmarking, significance testing, relationship testing, standardisation and forecasting.
- Excellent data interpretation and presentational skills for conveying complex concepts.
- Advanced Excel with additional statistical software and programming language skills including SQL and Power BI.
