Consultant Psychiatrist in Old Age Psychiatry Maples

Job overview

The successful candidate will provide excellent psychiatric care taking responsibility for 22 beds for Older Adults on the Maples Unit in Peterborough. 

The job plan is flexible to take account of clinical and professional interests and time is available within the job plan for suitably qualified and motivated individuals to develop interests such as teaching and research.

The post holder will work closely with colleagues in the CRHTT OP, community teams and liaison services for older people to provide a seamless pathway.

Maples is a 22 bedded ward, staffed as a single unit but patients with functional and organic illness are managed in two fully separate areas (8 beds for dementia, 14 beds for functional). The ward is supported by a full MDT including access to OT, OTAs, psychology, physiotherapy and SALT. Maples 1 also benefits from input from a dementia nurse consultant.  The ward is supported by a full time SAS dr and two junior drs. The post holder will be expected to be a clinical supervisor for the specialty trainee and development as an educational supervisor is encouraged. There is also a robust and effective discharge planning team. One of the CPFT community geriatricians visits the ward one morning per week and all the community physical health teams are available to support the ward.

Main duties of the job

Clinical:

To provide excellent psychiatric care for Older Adults within the designated inpatient area and to provide clinical leadership to other mental health professionals

To develop & deliver high quality mental health services within an integrated community model

To provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment plans for patients with complex psychiatric and psychological co-morbidity open to the wider MDT and to work collaboratively with a wide range of colleagues to ensure high quality, integrated care for patients

To deliver evidence based treatments

To make accurate diagnoses and record these appropriatelyTo maintain accurate and up to date clinical records

To partake in providing cross cover for consultant colleagues for annual & study leave in order to maintain continuous service

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will work alongside community-based consultant colleagues to provide medical leadership for an experienced multi-disciplinary mental health team delivering assessment and treatment for patients with both functional and organic illness. The post holder will have a key role in developing links with the wider MDT and with colleagues in primary care.

Inpatient care and medical input into the Older Peoples Crisis Team is provided by consultant colleagues within the acute care system and the post holder will work closely with them and with the colleagues within the liaison service to ensure care is well co-ordinated.

The job plan is flexible to take account of clinical and professional interests, including time within the job plan for suitably qualified and motivated individuals to develop interests such as teaching and research.

During 2020 we responded swiftly to the need for remote working, and now deliver the bulk of clinical assessments and all MDT team meetings via approved secure video platforms.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration and licence to practice
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Approved Clinician Status or eligible to attend training
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MD or PhD
  • AC/S12 Status

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary working
  • Experience of teaching and supervision of doctors in training.
Desirable criteria
  • Publications in the field of psychiatry
  • Experience of crisis and home treatment work.

Skills/Ability/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of policy and legislation relating to mental health.
  • Management skills
  • Ability to take a clinical lead.

Entry criteria for the grade

Essential criteria
  • Specialty Registration in specialty
  • CCT in relevant specialty or within 6 months of attainment of Higher Training CCT at time of interview.
  • Shall have equivalent experience and competencies recognised by GMC
