CPFT is pleased to offer an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician to join our expanding team. We are seeking a motivated, GPhC‑registered Pharmacy Technician to become part of our friendly and supportive service based at The Cavell Centre, Peterborough.
The successful candidate will work closely with our pharmacists and fellow technicians across inpatient mental health wards, delivering a range of clinical medicines management activities. In addition, the post holder will provide support to the dispensary as required, contributing to the safe and efficient delivery of pharmacy services.
Main duties of the job
The Clinical Medicines Management Technician team is responsible for delivering a high‑quality, comprehensive clinical medicines management service to the inpatient mental health wards on a day‑to‑day basis.
Our Clinical Medicines Management Technicians play a key role in supporting the ongoing development of the service. They act as a primary point of contact for any issues or queries related to this area of the pharmacy service, ensuring efficient communication and the smooth resolution of challenges as they arise.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- Coordinating the operational activities of the Clinical Medicines Management Technician service, ensuring the effective use of both technician and pharmacist time.
- Planning and allocating ward and team coverage across the medicines management technician workforce, ensuring appropriate prioritisation to maintain consistent and high‑quality service delivery.
- Providing education and training to student pharmacy technicians, foundation trainee pharmacists and pharmacy support workers involved in clinical medicines management activities.
- Identifying the need for, developing, reviewing and updating Standard Operating Procedures and related policy documents to ensure compliance with legal, professional and quality standards.
- Proposing, developing and implementing policies and procedures to enhance clinical medicines management services, and managing any associated service or practice changes appropriately.
- Participating in medication history screening on wards, including problem solving and liaising with service users, carers, GPs and other healthcare professionals.
- Contributing to medicines management schemes on the wards, including patient’s own drugs (PODs), self‑administration, medicines reconciliation and non‑stock top‑ups.
- Providing medicines counselling to service users and delivering medicines‑related information and advice to service users, carers and multidisciplinary team members.
- Taking an active role in discharge planning to ensure a seamless and safe transfer of care in relation to medicines.
- Participating in Trust‑wide medicines management initiatives that support quality improvement and patient safety.
- Delivering training on medicines management to nursing staff and other healthcare professionals.
- Supporting the safe and effective running of pharmacy clozapine services.
- Undertaking the dispensing of medicines for inpatients and outpatients, including labelling, stock control processes, accuracy checking and patient counselling, as appropriate.
- Ensuring effective stock control within the dispensary and on wards, working collaboratively with pharmacy support workers and the Dispensary Manager.
- Managing and supervising pharmacy support workers in the absence of the Dispensary Manager.
- Providing dispensing cover and supporting colleagues during periods of staff absence, such as annual leave or sickness.
Person specification
Education / Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BTEC/NVQ3 Pharmaceutical Sciences or CGLI/Apothecaries Hall pre 1985 or equivalent.
- Accredited Checking Technician Qualification.
- Registration with GPhC
Desirable criteria
- Medicines Management qualification (to degree level or equivalent).
- Patient counselling qualification.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant post qualification experience.
- Experience in hospital pharmacy, multidisciplinary team working, research, clinical trials or audit, pharmacy standard operating procedure development.
Desirable criteria
- Mental health speciality
- Project/change management role
- Management of resources

- Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, listening)
