The Emergency Departments and Medical Assessment Units at Peterborough City Hospital and Hinchingbrooke Hospital are currently undergoing exciting development initiatives.

We have a great multidisciplinary team working together across a co-located ED, AAU/MAU and Ambulatory Care Unit. An integrated Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) services is in development providing rapid assessment of patients while maintaining high standards of patient care and streaming them to appropriate treatment pathways.

Our external partners will provide you with exciting development opportunities. Our consultants and registrars working clinical shifts at Mid-Anglian General Practitioners Accident Scheme (MAGPAS) Helimedix and East Anglia Air Ambulance (EAA).

Main duties of the job

The sessional commitments contain 10 programmed activities per week. The Supporting Professional Activity shall be agreed at individual job planning and minimum of 1.5 PA is granted to start with and additional SPA activity shall be made up by supervision of trainees, non-trainees, ACP's and Physician Associated.

You will provide clinical assessment, treatment and supervision to all patients’ care requirements attending the Emergency Department until onward referral and discharge.

You will be joining the on-call consultant rota and be expected to cover for colleague's absence from duty on the basis of mutually agreed arrangements with the Department and Employing Trust.

You will ensure data collection and processing undertaken is consistently accurate and timely and complies with the Trust Data Quality Policy and information Governance Procedures.

You will ensure adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of patients, to be able to contact them when necessary, and to observe the current local arrangements for advising details of leave

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with GMC
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM or equivalent)
  • ATLS, APLS/EPALS and ALS provider
Desirable criteria
  • Certification of completion of specialist training or be within 6 months of gaining it by the interview date (or equivalent)
  • Must be on the GMC’s Specialist Register for Emergency Medicine
  • Instructor in one or more life support courses (ALS/ATLS/APLS or equivalent)
  • Additional sub-speciality training qualifications in: PEM; Critical Care; PHEM

Professional Experience and Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of first rate professional pricatice
  • Able to demonstarte clinical skills in management of full range of patient presentations as defined in the RCEM curriculum
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of extended clinical skills in areas pertinent to acute and emergency medicine

Research/Teaching/Publications

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate teaching ability and experience
  • Commitment to particiapte in research throughout Emergency Medicine
  • Willingness to undertake teaching of clinical staff at both undergraduate ans or postgradutae teaching in formal settings
  • Evidence of participation in indergraduate and or postgraduate teaching in formal settings
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of Education training course/further qualifications
  • Published research and audit
  • Peer reviewed publications

Personal requirements

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of management experience
  • Evidence of good team working with peers and other senior colleagues
  • Flexible attitude and good communication skills
  • Ability to integrate into and share leadership of a multidisciplinary team
  • IT and computer literacy
Desirable criteria
  • Has demonstrated ability to work under pressure and in difficult circumstances
  • To be able to demonstrate team leadership skills and work on own initiative

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Awareness of the requirements of clinical governance, with particular reference to the specialty
Desirable criteria
  • Formal experience in the development of patient safety systems as pertaining to Emergency Medicine

Further training, e.g., Management, Audit

Essential criteria
  • Experience of clinical audit and education
  • Evidence of delivering Quality Improvement Projects
Desirable criteria
  • Formal training in QIP methodology
