Job overview

This is a e Nephrology post for 7 programmed activities a week at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust (NWAFT)

To work with consultant colleagues to further develop and deliver a modern responsive nephrology services across the wider Peterborough and Huntingdon area, in particular:

-       7 day a week inpatient dialysis at Peterborough City Hospital (PCH)

-       AKI and general nephrology service at Hinchingbrooke Hospital (HH)

-       Home-based renal replacement therapy

Main duties of the job

·         The post holder will be expected to participate in future renal service developments, most notably the expansion of the unit-based and home dialysis programme, provision of 7 day a week inpatient acute dialysis at PCH, setting up AKI and general nephrology services at HH, and strengthening our link with primary care to improve CKD care.

·         Inpatient care for patients with renal conditions at PCH ward A8.

·         Prompt in-patient renal consult service to other medical and surgical specialties.

·         Provision of renal outpatient clinics at PCH, Stamford Hospital, HH, and Johnson Community Hospital.

·         Lead the development of and provide inpatient AKI services at PCH and HH.

·         To work with the established consultants to ensure equitable provision of nephrology services across the whole of the trust. This will include collaborative working, mutual cover for annual and study leave, and ensuring adherence to principles of clinical governance.

·         Lead on the provision of outpatient dialysis services, in collaboration with our renal tertiary care partners and home care team, including provision of out of hours telephone advice for the dialysis units and main hospitals.

·         Participation in the Renal on-call rota (1:6).

·         Supervise and train junior medical staff, including doctors and nurses.

·         Commitment to medical audit, continuing professional development (CPD) and annual revalidation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Your role will be to facilitate provision of Nephrology services to the population of Greater Peterborough, Huntingdonshire, and South West Lincolnshire.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • MRCP or equivalent.
  • • Specialist Register for Nephrology (or be eligible for entry onto this register within 6 months of application)
  • • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Nephrology and Medicine
  • • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, relating to nephrology
  • • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients.
  • • Procedural ability – kidney biopsy, insertion of non-cuffed dialysis lines
Desirable criteria
  • • Postgraduate thesis (MD or PhD)
  • • Specialist Register for General Internal Medicine
  • • Insertion of PD catheters
  • • Insertion of cuffed dialysis lines
  • • Area of special interest - haemodialysis, vascular access, home dialysis, AKI

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to advise and run a smooth, efficient nephrology service for both inpatients and outpatients.
  • • Ability to organize and manage inpatient and outpatient priorities and treatment.
  • • Experience of audit management
  • • Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets

Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Experience of supervising FY and CMT trainees, Trust Grade doctors, nurse specialists and ST traineeds
  • • Ability to teach basic clinical skills to undergraduates
Desirable criteria
  • • Postgraduate teaching experience and degree
  • • Ability to supervise postgraduate research

Research Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Experience of research relevant to nephrology.
  • • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
Desirable criteria
  • • Publications in peer-reviewed journals
