Job overview
The Waste & Environmental Manager’s role will be responsible for waste and environmental management and improving the sustainability of these functions within the Trust working closely with all areas of the business, in particular PFI colleagues, Estates & Facilities, Sustainability and Health, Safety & Security. The role will assist Soft FM colleagues with waste and environmental compliance including, auditing monitoring and reporting.
The role will provide a central point of contact for waste across the Trust and will provide support to all staff on waste management. Education and awareness will also form part of this role and it will be a key responsibility to ensure staff are adequately trained on waste and environmental management.
Improving sustainability and cost-efficiency of waste services and embedding circular economy principles will be an important aspect of this role. This includes implementing waste reduction, reuse, recycling and correct segregation.
The post holder must have a passion for sustainability and have the relevant skills, qualification and experience for the role. and embedding circular economy principles within the Trust at the following locations:
- Peterborough City Hospital
- Hinchingbrooke Hospital
- Stamford & Rutland Hospital
- Community Estate
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be a Senior Estates Professional responsible for all aspects of Waste Management and Procurement within the Trust. Including the identification, planning and reporting on the effectiveness of waste collections for all waste streams being generated by NWAFT sites.
Act as Trust subject matter expert on waste and environmental management working with all areas of the Trust.
Ensure compliance with waste and environmental legislation, policies and best practice including correct auditing & record keeping (in-line with HTM07). Ensure the Trust is made aware of any changes to legislation and assured plans for compliance are in place. Stay abreast of waste and environmental legislation, compliance and best practice.
Lead the contract management of waste management services for both PFI and retained estate which includes monitoring performance against KPIs and other contract requirements. Ensure PFI contractors are maintaining accurate record keeping and are working in partnership with the Trust.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Degree or equivalent experience in Environmental/Waste Management
- Professional qualification in an Environmental/Waste Management discipline
- Highly developed specialist knowledge and relevant practical experience
Desirable criteria
- Master’s Degree or equivalent in Environmental/Waste Management
- Member status in a recognised professional body i.e. CIWM
