Senior Digital Solutions Developer

NHS AfC: Band 7

We are Central East ICB, the new organisation entrusted with serving more than 3.5 million people across Bedfordshire, Luton, Milton Keynes, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and Hertfordshire.

We are responsible for making sure that the NHS can continue to support our community – now, and in the future. Everything we do will be guided by our core purpose: to do what best serves the population of this area.

We promise to focus on what makes the biggest difference to people’s lives – acting earlier to help prevent illness and detect disease and making it easier for our community to get the health care they need, closer to home, whenever that’s possible.

If you need support with the application process, please contact our People Team at [email protected].

Job overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Digital Solutions Developer to join our Digital Development and Automation Team within HBL ICT Shared Services. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in delivering innovative digital solutions that support multiple NHS organisations and improve services across the health economy.

As a member of a specialist team, you will lead the design, development and support of automation solutions, databases, and bespoke applications used by a large user base across the HBL partnership. You will work within an ITIL-driven environment to ensure high-quality, resilient and secure digital services; you will also contribute to both business-as-usual operations as well as transformational projects.

The role combines hands-on technical development (including automation with tools like UIPath as well as SQL Server database management) with leadership responsibilities, including mentoring junior staff, supporting service improvement, and contributing to strategic digital initiatives. Y

You will be working closely with internal teams, NHS partners, and third-party suppliers, where you will translate complex business requirements into effective digital solutions that enhance operational efficiency and support better patient outcomes.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled developer who is enthusiastic about digital innovation, problem-solving, and making a meaningful impact within the NHS.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Digital Solutions Developer, you will play a key role in delivering and supporting innovative digital services across the HBL partnership. Working as part of the Digital Development and Automation Team, you will combine hands-on technical expertise with leadership responsibilities ensuring high-quality, dependable, and secure solutions are delivered to a large NHS user base.

Key responsibilities include:

·       Delivering and maintaining automation solutions (e.g. UIPath), SQL Server databases, and bespoke web applications

·       Working with stakeholders across partner organisations to gather requirements and deliver user-focused solutions.

·       Contributing to service continuity, disaster recovery, and major incident management activities

·       Producing and maintaining technical documentation to support system understanding and knowledge transfer

·       Participating in change and problem management processes, including Change Advisory Boards (CAB). In addition to technical delivery, you will function as a senior member of the team, supporting and mentoring colleagues, sharing expertise, and contributing to continuous service improvement. You will also be expected to contribute to project delivery, balancing day-to-day operational work with longer-term development initiatives.

Working for our organisation

HBL ICT Shared Services was established in 2015 to provide comprehensive ICT services to six partner organisations, with each partner organisation having an equal say in the strategic direction of the ICT service. HBL ICT is not a legal entity and therefore is hosted by NHS Central East Integrated Care Board who in turn are one of the partnering organisations.

HBL ICT is a self-funding service with an operational turnover of circa £10m per annum, which is derived from a recipe of income from its partner organisations, plus other NHS clients within the local health economy.

Our mission is to become the IT provider of choice, by delivering cost effective services which embrace the technology innovations from the industry to improve patient outcomes, in accordance to regulatory authorities.

This means developing a financial and service model that will make the service viable, sustainable and able to meet the technological challenges for the partner organisations, enabling them to operate in a more agile and effective way.
