Job overview

They will support the assessment and treatment of Emergency General Surgery patients at the University Hospital of Wales. This will include undertaking Consultant supervised surgery on the dedicated SDEC lists with good opportunities to achieve competency in laparoscopic appendicectomy and cholecystectomy as well as surgery for emergency hernia and perianal sepsis.

The appointee will be responsible for organisation of the lists and pre-operative and post-operative care of the patients.  The appointee may contribute to the nights and weekend middle grade/CT on call cover depending on experience and the needs of the department.

 We are a teaching health board with close links to Cardiff University. The University boasts a high-profile teaching, research and development role within the UK and abroad. Together we are training the next generation of medical professionals.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • MBBS or equivalent
  • • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
Desirable criteria
  • • Intercalated Degree
  • • MSc or PhD
  • • Academic excellence (prizes, merits, distinctions etc.)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Clinical experience in General Surgery at Foundation Level
  • • Evidence of participation in Research and Clinical Governance
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of emergency duties at middle grade level
  • • Portfolio and logbook evidence of ability to undertake a range of emergency general surgery procedures with minimal supervision.
  • • Experience of involvement in NHS Quality Improvement work

Additional Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • • MRCS completed
  • • Training to CT 2 level
  • • Experience of Emergency General Surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Logbook evidence of undertaking cholecystectomy/appendicectomy
