WHO WE ARE:

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is one of the largest Integrated Health Board in the UK, employing over 16,000 staff and providing over 100 specialist services. Serving a population of around 500,000 people living in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, we are focussed on the health and care needs of our local population whilst also working with our partners to develop regional services. Together we are committed to improving health outcomes for everyone and to delivering excellent care and support.

Our mission is “Living Well, Caring Well, Working Together”. We have recently refreshed our strategy, Shaping Our Future Wellbeing, which sets out the Health Board’s Vision for improving the health and wellbeing of the populations we serve by 2035 through the delivery of our strategic objectives; Putting People First, Providing Outstanding Quality, Delivering in the Right Places, and Acting for the Future. We have challenging times ahead, but we are confident that by tackling these challenges together, we can support people to live healthier lives and reduce the unfair differences in the prevalence of illness and health outcomes we see in our communities today. We aspire to deliver outstanding care and treatment for people when they need it, where they need it; care that compares well with the best in the world, but to do so, we need to transform how we deliver services over the next decade and beyond.

We are a values-driven organisation and out goals will only be realised if our values are at the heart of everything we do. Created by colleagues, patients and their families and carers, our values are:

·         We are kind and caring

·         We are respectful

·         We have trust and integrity

·         We take personal responsibility

Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Registered Mental Health Nurse to join our supportive team on Willow ward, which is an adult acute treatment ward based within Adult Mental Health services in Cardiff.

Successful applicants will play a central role in delivering high‑quality, compassionate, and recovery‑focused care to adults experiencing acute mental health difficulties. Working within a 17‑bedded acute ward, you will support individuals during some of the most challenging periods of their lives, helping them stabilise, regain autonomy, and transition safely back into the community.

The ward operates within a fast‑paced, multidisciplinary environment where teamwork, resilience, and adaptability are essential. The service is committed to trauma‑informed care, patient involvement, and continuous improvement.

Staff will be offered a supernumerary period on commencement of post, to offer orientation and support in understanding service provision and associated processes. You will be supported by a ward management team centred on staff wellbeing and development, and newly registered nurses will undergo a preceptorship programme to support ongoing training and development.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide high‑quality, evidence‑based nursing care to adults experiencing acute mental health difficulties, including psychosis, severe mood disorders, crisis presentations, and complex co‑morbidities. They will complete mental state examinations, risk assessments, and physical health monitoring to inform collaborative, person‑centred care planning. The role includes developing and evaluating individualised care plans with service users, families, and the MDT, and administering medication safely in line with NMC standards.

They will recognise and respond to emerging risks using de‑escalation and trauma‑informed approaches, contributing to a safe ward environment through safety huddles, incident reviews, and safeguarding. This is essential when acting as nurse in charge and providing supportive leadership.

The post holder will build therapeutic relationships and deliver one‑to‑one sessions, psychoeducation, psychological skills work, and structured activities to support coping, self‑management, and relapse prevention. They will work collaboratively with the MDT and community teams, participate in ward rounds and discharge planning, and support healthcare support workers and students.

They will maintain professional registration, engage in supervision, reflective practice, and required training, and contribute to service improvement and evidence‑based practice.

Welsh language skills are desirable; English and/or Welsh speakers are welcome to apply.
