Job overview

Applications are invited from medicine staff-in-training (core level training or above) for a full-time research fellow post in infectious diseases. The main role of the fellow will be to support our expanding portfolio of clinical trials. 

Applicants must demonstrate initiative, independence and an aptitude for multi-disciplinary working. A commitment to a research-active career in infectious diseases is desirable. All applicants will be expected to join the NIHR Associate Principal Investigator Scheme

The post will commence on 2nd February 2026 and be for one year in the first instance. However, a longer period may be negotiable for applicants who are interested in pursuing a part-time higher research degree (MD) at Cardiff University.

Main duties of the job

This is a full-time research post. No clinical commitments, aside from clinical trial work, will be outlined in this job description. Please note that clinical duties undertaken should be agreed with your research supervisor and not be outside the scope of your clinical competence and grade of training. 

RESEARCH - successful candidates will join an enthusiastic and dynamic research team comprising of clinicians, specialty registrars and clinical research specialist nurses with ongoing commercial and non-commercial research projects. Successful candidates will be expected to lead the day-to-day running of the ID trial portfolio including recruitment and data collection for ongoing Infectious Diseases research studies.  They may also be asked to support/provide cover for other studies outside of the ID specialty.

CLINICAL RESEARCH FACILITY (CRF) - successful candidates will provide clinical cover for any research studies pertaining to their subspecialty that involve the patient clinical trial journey taking them via the CRF. This will include attending inpatient and outpatient areas.

Candidates must be GCP (Good Clinical Practice) trained.

CARDIFF & VALE RESEARCH FELLOW PROGRAMME - all successful candidates will automatically become part of the Research Fellow Programme in Cardiff & Vale. All applicants will be expected to join the NIHR Associate Principal Investigator Scheme.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Base location:    University Hospital of Wales (post may include commitments at other sites within Cardiff and Vale UHB)

Duration:        12 months (extendable to 36 months with mutual agreement)

Accountability:    

The post holder will be professionally accountable to the Medical Director and Clinical Directorate of the Integrated Medicine Directorate.  The Post Holder managerially accountable to Dr Danielle Huckle (Mentor and Line Manager for Research Fellows).

Purpose:

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (C&V UHB) aims to be a leading international centre for research, significantly increasing the amount of research available to its patients and cultivating future Principal Investigators (PIs). The Infectious Diseases (ID) research team has a deep commitment to advancing knowledge and improving clinical care for patients with infectious diseases. This includes basic science projects in collaboration with Cardiff University and a broad portfolio of clinical trials recruiting people with HIV, tuberculosis, bloodstream infections, pneumonia, influenza and urinary tract infections. 

To achieve these goals, the Senior Clinical Research Fellow in Infectious Diseases post is designed to:

•    Support delivery and uplift of clinical trial activity within C&V UHB's ID portfolio.
•    Equip the postholder with practical experience and education in setting up and delivering clinical trials.
•    Support the postholder's personal development objectives through other educational activities during the fellowship.

Working Environment

The postholder will be based in the Clinical Research Facility at University Hospital of Wales (UHW), collaborating with senior researchers on clinical trial delivery in an established research environment.  Your office will be conveniently located within the Clinical Research Facility, where Infectious Disease research trials are primarily conducted and supported by an experienced nursing and administrative research delivery team. The overall research activity within the facility spans Phases 1 to 3, including First-in-Human and Advanced Medical (Cell and Gene) Therapies. The postholder will be required to attend inpatient and outpatient settings around the hospital to support research activities.  They may also be asked to support/cover other studies outside of the ID portfolio.

  • Progression in clinical training to core training level or above
  • At least one years' experience of working for the NHS in a recognised medical training programme
  • Commitment to multi-disciplinary working

  • Evidence of ability to work both in a team and independently

Research
