Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Locum Consultant in Paediatric Palliative Medicine to work 6 sessions per week.  This locum post is available for a period of six months.

The post combines work as part of the All Wales Paediatric Palliative Care (PPC) Network in the tertiary centre with that of a medical practitioner in a Children’s Hospice.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales.  The basic salary for this post is £72,758 per annum for a 6-session commitment.

Applicants should preferably either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within three months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full.  In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Main duties of the job

The post will cover six sessions providing tertiary (level IV) PPM as part of the All Wales team based at the Children’s Hospital in Cardiff.  Core tertiary work represents the minimum service the team should always maintain.  It is currently shared with the other three Consultants on the team on a ‘Consultant of the week’ basis and comprises:

•    Weekly MDT at Children’s Hospital / hybrid
•    Ward round at Children’s Hospital
•    Ward round at Ty Hafan
•    Receive and see / triage new referrals
•    Urgent domiciliary visits
•    Urgent MDT’s
•    Telephone support
•    On-call palliative care advice for patients across Wales
•    Fetal medicine patients (shared with Dr Jo Griffiths)
