Job overview
Here at Velindre Cancer Services we have a new and exciting opportunity for an exceptional, enthusiastic strategic nurse lead to join us as Deputy Director of Nursing, AHP & Health Scientists.
The role is an integral part of the SST Directorate Triumvirate, working in partnership to lead and transform services within the directorate in line with commissioned activity.
The post holder will possess exceptional operational expertise to deliver and evaluate progress in achieving the Trust’s vision in achieving excellence in healthcare, progressing into the new Velindre Cancer Centre (nVCC) in Cardiff. When complete, the new Velindre Cancer Centre will be a world class facility which provides specialist tertiary oncology services to patients across Southeast Wales.
Main duties of the job
The delivery of a directorate and trust wide integrated clinical strategy to continually improve the patient/client experience both locally within the directorate and within the strategy groups within the trust and nationally.
On behalf of the Director of Nursing, AHP & Health Science to effectively translate and implement strategic policy into practice, ensuring that intended benefits to patients/clients and community are realised.
Translate national guidance and direction into local actions for service delivery.
Take a lead role in the development of short- and long-term strategic planning for redesign and modernisation of nursing, AHP and Healthcare science within the service through the IMTP and Strategy Group work, adjusting to meet the changing demands of the service.
To lead and sponsor projects to develop new ways of working and service improvement in line with the strategies and organisational objectives.
To ensure that there is a sustainable workforce plan in place to deliver high quality patient/client care which considers opportunities for multi-disciplinary and skill mix redesign.
To support and be proactive in profiling the business of the service in conjunction with the Head of Communication and manage and respond to press and other media enquiries.

You will provide strategic, visible, clinical, professional and compassionate leadership, for nursing, AHP and healthcare science across the directorate. You will also provide high level specialist expertise for service transformation, strategic patient pathway review, patient safety, quality and experience, innovation, efficiency and performance that improves quality of care and patient outcomes, driving transformation through agreed improvement models.
You will possess relevant professional qualifications plus additional specialist management knowledge, acquired through training and experience.

Qualifications and Knoweldge
Essential criteria
- Educated to Masters level or equivalent qualification, knowledge and/or experience supplemented by highly specialist qualification to doctoral level equivalency.
- Registered Nurse Adult, AHP professional or HealthCare Scientist with current NMC/ HCPC or professional registration.
- Evidence of Continuous Professional Development.
- Highly relevant specialist clinical knowledge relating to sphere of responsibilities.
- Clear understanding of the concept and working arrangements of diverse clinical areas
- Detailed understanding of the provision of health services
- High level knowledge of all current issues related to professional nursing, AHP or Healthcare Science practice.

- Significant post registration experience at a very senior nursing, AHP or Healthcare Scientist level inclusive of managing large groups of staff with large spans of control
- Highly specialised and in-depth professional knowledge and experience from a range of nursing/AHP or Healthcare Scientist discipline across the services of the Trust.
- Significant senior operational management experience across healthcare sectors
- Experience of developing and implementing governance frameworks to support service delivery and service change
- Extensive personnel, performance management experience.
