Job overview

Support the Hospital Palliative Care team at Velindre:

·       Use significant knowledge and experience of specialist palliative care to horizon scan and look for opportunities for innovative clinical practice

·       With the team contribute to collective thinking and planning regarding service provision including the integration of services regionally and with other providers when appropriate. Contribute to the development of future strategic plans for clinical and educational services.

  • To act as a Specialist Palliative Medicine Consultant to all clinical services at Velindre Cancer Centre and Velindre University NHS Trust
  • To provide high quality, timely, patient-centred and consultant led care for in-patients, outpatients, day-case and community-based patients and those accessing assessment unit, radiotherapy and other services

  • To work to ensure an integrated model of palliative care service delivery to all patients within the catchment areas Velindre services by collaborating closely with other specialist and generalist palliative care providers.

 

Main duties of the job

  • To contribute to teaching, audit, quality improvement and research activities 
  • To take on appropriate management and clinical governance responsibilities.
  • To participate in an on-call rota providing 24/7 out of hours support to all hospitals, specialist palliative care in-patient units and community-based patients within the Cardiff and Vale University Heath Board Areas 
  • To act as a Consultant Palliative Medicine to the VUNHST in-patient unit, assessment unit and multi-disciplinary team
  • To provide consultant-led ward rounds and multi-disciplinary meetings and be a clinical contact for the resident and SAS doctors, nursing staff and other members of the multi- professional team on the unit.
  • To co-ordinate in-patient, outpatient, acute oncology and ambulatory assessment services in conjunction with consultant colleagues and management teams looking at performance outcomes and ensuring excellent documentation and evaluation of services.
  • To continue to develop and improve links between services within the CAVUHB, Velindre Cancer Centre and Primary Care Services
  • To work to achieve the priorities of the Palliative and End of Life Care Programme priorities as set out by Welsh Government and the NHS Wales Executive or equivalent.
  • To help ensure that arrangements are in place for adequate medical staff to be available at all times in relation to the treatment and care of patients within the hospital services.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • On Specialist Register with GMC as a specialist in palliative medicine or eligible for CCT within 6 months of date of interview and have passed exit exam or a statement of eligibility for registration issued by PMETB or a primary medical qualification and recognized specialist qualification from a European Member State which will allow direct entry to the GMC Specialist Register.
  • CCT/equivalent in Palliative Medicine
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • UK work experience at specialist registrar level or above
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate qualification e.g. MA, MSc, MD
  • Teaching qualification/Higher qualification in medical education.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of working effectively as a part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Teaching and training of post/undergraduate medical staff
  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and completing audit/QI
  • Commitment to evidence based practice and experience of research
Desirable criteria
  • Working as part of the management team
