Applications are invited for Junior Clinical Fellow in Trauma & Orthopaedics within Cardiff and Vale Health Board, which is available to start from 5th August 2026 until 3rd August 2027.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will be based at University Hospital Llandough which is the elective orthopaedic centre for Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan and hosts three trauma wards of different acuity levels.

The full range of trauma and orthopaedic services for adults is offered including hand, joint replacement, soft tissue, shoulder and elbow, knee and foot and ankle surgery. The predominant role of the postholder will be to support the Foundation doctors in the day to day care of ward patients and will link in with the Surgical Care Practitioners, Clinical Fellows, Specialist Registrars and Consultants, working with a number of teams in rotation and therefore will have the opportunity to gain exposure to many aspects of trauma orthopaedic surgery.

There will be some opportunity to attend theatre lists, outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary meetings with the opportunity to develop skills in these areas. The postholder will cover the daytime ward duties, both elective and trauma. There will be no out of hours on-call commitment with the intended working week being 40 hours Monday to Friday. Some flexible working may be required to support early evening theatre lists and colleagues on leave. There will be opportunities for research or audit projects, with a number of national multicentre plus commercial trials in progress.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Current GMC Registration with a full licence to practise
Desirable criteria
  • MSc or PHD
  • Intercalated Degree
  • Academic Excellence (Prizes, merits, distinctions etc.,)

Previous Experience

  • Previous trauma and orthopaedic experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of UK healthcare systems
