As part of the NHS Wales’s Strategic Mental Health Workforce Plan, Health Boards are recruiting to a number of Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology (CAAP) posts. Successful applicants will be employed by an NHS Wales Health Board working within local adult or older adult psychology services. There is a single national selection process to appoint to the CAAP posts. If selected for an interview, you will be asked to provide your preference for the available roles, and this is the position you will be interview for.

Under the supervision of a practitioner psychologist, the role will include the practice and development of evidence-based and theory-driven assessment, formulation, intervention and evaluation skills to work with people experiencing psychological difficulties. There will also be opportunities to utilise research skills to conduct Quality Improvement projects, typically in the form of service evaluations or audits.

During the first year of employment, you will study a fully funded MSc Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology - Adult Lifespan programme at Cardiff University to acquire the CAAP competencies described by the British Psychological Society. Typically, you will work clinically three days a week and study two days a week. The educational programme is delivered approximately 50% distance learning and 50% face to face.

Main duties of the job

The role will include psychological assessment, short to medium term therapeutic interventions, involvement in innovative service delivery and developing psychologically informed working practice with a range of colleagues. There is also the opportunity to contribute to service evaluation audit, research and training within the service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Applicants should have an undergraduate psychology degree of at least 2:2, or have completed an MSc Psychology Conversion, conferring eligibility for graduate membership of the British Psychological Society

Please note that in order to progress into an employed role following training, all of the essential criteria in the job advert must be met and all clinical competencies satisfactorily ratified. However, to be eligible to join the CAAP training programme, only the first of the ‘Qualifications and Experience’ essential criteria - “An approved qualification in psychology conferring eligibility for graduate registration with the British Psychological Society (Class 2.2 or higher) - need be met, alongside all other listed essential and desirable criteria.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • An approved qualification in psychology conferring eligibility for graduate basis for registration with the British Psychological Society, (Class 2.2 or higher).
  • Have a post-graduate Masters level (or equivalent) degree in Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology
Desirable criteria
  • Post-graduate qualifications or training in psychological theory, intervention or research.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrated ability to work within multi-disciplinary services and with colleagues from a variety of professional backgrounds.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in services involved in the provision of psychological care.
  • Experience of delivering psychological intervention or training.

  • Able to manage confidential information and know how and when to share this information appropriately.
