Job overview
- To generate and pursue independent and original early phase trial related clinical trial ideas through interactions with pre-clinical scientists in Cardiff, Wales and through participation in the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre /Industry Alliance process
- To disseminate research findings using appropriate and effective publications, national/international meetings and conferences, and research seminars.
- To identify sources of external funding and apply for them, preparing research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate
This post is a fixed term/secondment for 2 years, from 1st October 2026-30th September 2028, due to funding. If you are interested in applying for the secondment position, you must obtain permission from your current line manager prior to applying for this post.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
This Clinical Research Fellowship will be conducting research within oncology and contribute to the overall research performance of Velindre and leading to the publishing of work in high-quality journals. The post holder will be supported to finish their higher research degree if required (PhD/MD) and the Fellowship will provide an opportunity for an oncology trainee to undertake a dedicated period of research during their training, equipping them with the skills, knowledge and links to become future cancer research leaders in Wales.

Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Qualified medical practitioner
- MRCP
- Full GMC registration and license to practise
- Completed or close to completion of a PhD or MD
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of grant applications
- Knowledge of process through R&D for clinical trials
- Proven publication record
Experience
Essential criteria
- Clinical experience at ST3 level in medical oncology
- Oncology experience including recruiting and management of patients into clinical trials
- Skills in preparing and delivering presentations and reports
- IT skills particularly in the use of MS office applications
- Analytical skills – able to analyse and present complex research data, in a range of formats to a variety of audiences
Desirable criteria
- Skills in educating in several teaching styles and multidisciplinary audience
- Proven ability to manage own time and deliver a range of tasks to deadlines
- Experience of working in or managing patients requiring high dependency/intensive care
- Experience of Phase oncology 1 trials
Skills and Attributes
Essential criteria
- Proven ability to use IT to deliver presentations and write reports
- Proven ability to critically appraise literature
- Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and team-working within work
