Job overview
We're excited to advertise a Band 7 Senior Clinical Scientist post in the Nuclear Medicine team at Velindre Cancer Centre.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an HCPC registered Clinical Scientist (or someone close to registration through STP/Route 2) to join a friendly and supportive team delivering a wide range of nuclear medicine services. The role includes involvement in diagnostic imaging, quality assurance, image processing, and a growing portfolio of radionuclide therapies including Lu-177 PRRT, I-131 and Ra-223, as well as clinical trials and service development.
It's a particularly exciting time to join us as we prepare to move into the new Velindre Cancer Centre, opening in February 2027. The new hospital will provide a state-of-the-art environment for patients and staff, with modern facilities designed to support innovation, research and excellent patient care.
Outside work, Cardiff offers the best of both worlds. As Wales's capital city, it provides all the benefits of a modern, vibrant city, with excellent restaurants, culture and sporting events. At the same time, some of the UK's most spectacular scenery is right on your doorstep. Main duties of the job
The role of the post-holder is to provide clinical scientist expertise in the field of Nuclear Medicine. The role involves autonomy and personal responsibility.
The post-holder is required to participate in the routine clinical service (both diagnostic imaging, non-imaging and radionuclide therapies) as well as clinical trials.
The post holder is expected to take a leading role in the teaching and training of staff and students.
The role involves using highly complex imaging and measurement equipment, developing and applying information technology, dealing with hazards such as radiation and biological samples.
Interpreting and complying with extensive legislation is an essential part of the post-holder’s duties.
The post-holder will be required to contribute to staff and service development in Velindre Cancer Centre, both within and outside the department.
Liaison with professional colleagues, including senior medical staff, the MPE and RPA, is an essential requirement of the post-holder’s duties.

Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- BSc Undergraduate Physics or equivalent degree
- MSc in Medical Physics, physical science or equivalent
- Membership of profession or scientific organisations
- Completion of route 2 training or the National School of Healthcare Science STP scheme and subsequent registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) (or for non-UK candidates the certainty of getting registration).
Desirable criteria
- Candidates close to completion of route 2 training or STP are encouraged to apply and will be considered
Skills and Attributes
Essential criteria
- Good writing skills when writing documentation and procedures
- Good communication skills conveying scientific issues to colleagues and patients.
- Ease of maths calculations.
- Understanding of guidelines and legislation relevant to delivery of a nuclear medicine service
- Good analytical skills for scientific research and development
- Able to understand, use and implement specialist manufacturer supplied software
- Excellent scientific report writing skills, communication and organisational skills
- A good communicator and an ability to obtain co-operation of staff and patients
- Must have physical dexterity to draw up radiopharmaceuticals in a safe manner
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Calm disposition and ability to deal with people
- Ability to work under pressure
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience training and working within a Nuclear Medicine department; working in a patient facing role and with unsealed radiopharmaceuticals.
- Experience of using and performing quality assurance on a range of technical equipment such as a SPECT/CT, radionuclide calibrator and gamma counter. Including experience in image processing.
- Experience in the delivery of radionuclide therapy to patients, some of which require lead aprons to be worn and prolonged periods of standing during the delivery of the therapy.

- Engaged in Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
