Job overview
The colorectal service in HDUHB is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and dynamic consultant colorectal surgeon. This is a substantive post, based at Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a laparoscopic colorectal service at Bronglais hospital and to the wider health board along with consultant colleagues, as part of a highly skilled and collaborative MDT. The role also includes participating in the 1:4 consultant on call rota for general surgery at Bronglais. The service is looking to recruit a consultant who can lead in further developing a sustainable colorectal service to the population of West Wales.
Main duties of the job
To lead on the provision and delivery of a quality and safe clinical service. Following agreed clinical pathways for the assessment and treatment of colorectal patients. The successful candidate will have core clinical expertise in General Surgery with a sub-specialist interest in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. They will participate in the 1:4 consultant on-call rota at Bronglais Hospital, providing leadership to junior staff and being the senior decision maker for all acute surgical admissions on the site. Experience in endoscopy is desirable.
Using their specialty expertise, the postholder will support and maintain the confidence of development strategies formulated for the specialty or the Health board.
The postholder will sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate and will play a pivotal role in the teaching and training of medical undergraduates and postgraduates. They will be expected to undertake an Educational Supervisor role for resident and SAS level colleagues and participate in regular multidisciplinary audits.
Strong leadership and team building skills will be essential for this post.
The postholder must undertake all work in accordance with the health board’s procedures and operating policies and conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the health board’s service plans.

Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Full registration and a License to Practice with the General Medical Council.
- On the GMC Specialist Register (including via Portfolio Pathway (CESR)/European Community Rights) or will have CCT due within six months of interview date.
- Valid Certified Advanced Life Support.
- Where a sub-specialty interest is required sub-specialty training should be to a level appropriate for UK consultant sub-specialist practice - fellowship or equivalent level experience.
