Job overview

We are seeking a motivated and capable senior doctor to join our supportive and collaborative Emergency Department team at Glangwili General Hospital. 

This senior-level role offers the opportunity to play a key part in delivering high-quality emergency care within a busy district general hospital. As the senior doctor on site outside normal working hours, you will provide clinical leadership for the Emergency Department, managing acutely unwell patients, supporting and supervising resident medical staff, and helping to coordinate patient flow across the department. You will work closely with the on-call Emergency Medicine Consultant, backed by an experienced and approachable multidisciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver high-quality emergency medical care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department. 

  • Assess, diagnose and manage acutely unwell patients, taking responsibility for clinical decision-making appropriate to the role. 

  • Act as the senior doctor on site during out-of-hours periods, providing supervision, support and guidance to resident medical staff. 

  • Help coordinate patient flow within the Emergency Department to support safe and effective care. 

  • Work in partnership with Emergency Medicine Consultants and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure the highest standards of patient care. 

  • Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement activities and governance processes to support ongoing service development. 

  • Contribute to teaching, training and educational activities within the department. 

  • Work collaboratively with clinical, managerial and professional colleagues across the Health Board to deliver safe, effective and patient-centred care. 

As a senior member of the team, you will be supported to maintain and develop your professional skills while contributing to the continued growth and development of Emergency Medicine services within Hywel Dda University Health Board.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice.
  • Valid Certified Advanced Life Support.
Desirable criteria
  • Additional clinical qualification(s).
  • Evidence of working towards membership of the Royal College.

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Participation in clinical audit (or quality improvement project) and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of risk management.
  • Knowledge of annual job planning/appraisal review process.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Shall have at least 4 years full time Postgraduate experience (or its equivalent on a part time or flexible basis).
  • Able to demonstrate core competencies and clinical skills relevant to the post.
Desirable criteria
  • NHS Experience.
  • Able to demonstrate evidence of leading a team.

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and resident doctors.

Other

Essential criteria
  • Ability to travel between sites in a timely manner.
  • Flexible approach to the needs of the service.
Desirable criteria
  • Welsh Speaker (Level 1)
