Job overview

We are looking for a highly committed and motivated individual to join our Haematology team. Applications are invited to join us in developing our service for our patients in West Wales. Our dedicated and forward-looking team of 5 consultants provide a comprehensive haematology service in the four hospitals in an area of outstanding beauty. This post has been created as part of the redesign of haematology services across the Health Board and continue to develop as part of the wider transformation process. Support for the post includes Staff and Associate Specialists as well as foundation trainees. Our vision is to provide a future proofed service for our patients to ensure they can be cared for locally.

 Our current service review will be aiming to;-

  • Promote local improvement and performance
  • Remove unwarranted variation of services
  • Drive quality and governance throughout to improve patient experience and outcomes.
  • Introduce single disciplines within Haematology
  • Aid in the delivery of a digital network.

Main duties of the job

The duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.

  • The post holder will contribute to all aspects of the general haematology and haemo-oncology work including active participation in all departmental meetings and the on-call rota.
  • The development of sub-specialties within the department can be discussed and encouraged.
  • Occasional clinics in other hospital sites may be required, although options for virtual clinics are available.
  • We are looking for someone who can engage with the development of our service to ensure our rurality is not an obstacle to excellent care for our patients.
  • To provide cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences.
  • To ensure that proper clinical records are made and maintained.

Working for our organisation

Hywel Dda University Health Board is the planner and provider of NHS healthcare services for people in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and its bordering counties. Our 11,000 members of staff provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services for around 384,000 people across a quarter of the landmass of Wales. We do this in partnership with our three local authorities and public, private and third sector colleagues, including our volunteers, through:

  • Four main hospitals: Bronglais General in Aberystwyth, Glangwili General in Carmarthen, Prince Philip in Llanelli and Withybush General in Haverfordwest

  • 48 general practices (four of which are managed practices), 47 dental practices (including three orthodontic), 99 community pharmacies, 44 general ophthalmic practices (43 providing Eye Health Examination Wales and 34 low vision services) and 17 domiciliary only providers and 11 health centres
  • Numerous locations providing mental health and learning disabilities services

Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Our team currently consists of 5 consultants (2 part time), 4 Middle grade Doctors, 6 Haematology CNS and 1.6 Haematology Pharmacists and a QIST Manager. A current service review will plan to see an increase in numbers of staff to accommodate current workload. Each of the 4 sites provide SACT treatments as well as out-patient clinics. The team work well together and share a common vision of providing excellent care for our haematology patients.

Wales has developed a haematology community which includes all the consultants in all the hospitals who work closely together to deliver the service for the total population of the country. There are a number regional sub-speciality MDTs which support decision making the delivery of patient care.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • FRCPath or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Appropriate Higher Degree e.g. MD, PhD or MSc or equivalent

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad based experience in Haematology
  • Knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent)
  • Knowledge and participation in CPD
  • Competence in clinical and laboratory haematology
  • Able to apply knowledge
  • Safe and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience of communicating bad news
  • Meet the requirement of the GMC’s “Good Medical Practice”
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of NHS
  • Wider experience, research and training in providing sub specialty service
  • Evidence of above average performance
  • Membership of the British Society for Haematology (BSH)
  • Additional clinical qualification(s)

Clinical Governance

  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
  • Comprehension of core philosophy and building blocks of Clinical Governance

Research
