Job overview

The consultant will be a leader within perinatal services locally. This will involve attendance at the Hywel Dda UHB Perinatal Mental Health and Wellbeing Steering Group and Wales Perinatal Mental Health Network meetings. It is particularly important to increase awareness understanding of perinatal mental health throughout the region. The consultant will be expected to work alongside the wider perinatal team to lead on improvements in this area. Close liaison and creating good relationships with other mental health services, obstetrics, paediatrics, primary care and children services will be a vital part of this.

The consultant will hold responsibility for all of the parents on the caseload of the Hywel Dda UHB PMHS. They will be expected to provide advice and assessments when needed.

The post holder will be provided with an office based Ty Myddfai. The post holder will share an allocated medical secretary with Perinatal Team.

Main duties of the job

The target patient group includes:

• Women who are moderately or severely mentally ill during pregnancy and within nine months of childbirth. This will be extended up to 24 months as the capacity of the service increases.

• Women with a past history of psychotic or other severe mental illness for preventative advice and/or interventions.

• Women with a maternal history of Bipolar affective disorder or psychotic illness for preventative advice and/or interventions.

• For women with less severe or disabling antenatal and postnatal illnesses the service also provides consultation and advice to other professionals.

The service accepts referrals from midwives, health visitors, obstetricians, GPs, psychiatric services, and other health care professionals. Referrals taken via telephone through the team duty system with the option of further discussion in the weekly MDT. Accepted referrals are then assessed through a screening clinic where those accepted by the service are allocated to a practitioner. Those not found to meet the referral criteria will be offered advice and consultation.
