We are looking for a skilled and experienced individual to take on the role of the Band 8a maternity leave cover for a 12-month period covering Emergency Department (ED), Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) and Antimicrobial Stewardship within Glangwili General Hospital. This combined role requires strong leadership and excellent organisational skills.
The successful candidate will oversee clinical pharmacy services to the ED and CDU, ensuring the highest standards of care, patient experience and operational effectives. In addition to this, the candidate will support the antimicrobial stewardship team to reduce antimicrobial resistance and promote responsible use of antimicrobials throughout the hospital.
Main duties of the job
The postholder will act as a clinical expert, delivering specialist pharmaceutical care and advice and will also:
- Deliver a clinical pharmacy service to ED and CDU.
- Participate in consultant ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Practice as an independent prescriber within scope of expertise, supporting patient-centred care and timely medication access.
- Conduct medication reviews and contribute to patient education and discharge planning.
- Develop and implement evidence-based policies, procedures and prescribing guidelines aligned with national and local frameworks.
- Monitor and analyse drug expenditure across the Directorates. Identify cost-saving opportunities and promote cost-effective prescribing practices.
- Contribute to the education and training of pharmacy staff, medical staff, nursing teams and other healthcare professionals within the directorates.
- Support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including supervision of pharmacy students, trainee pharmacists and foundation pharmacists during clinical rotations.
- Supervise junior staff in quality improvement and audit activities.
- Work closely with colleagues across Hywel Dda and contribute to the All Wales Antimicrobial Group.

Qualifications and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Master’s degree in Pharmacy
- Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council
- Postgraduate MSc or Diploma in area of practice or equivalent experience or qualifications
Desirable criteria
- Accredited supervisor for foundation or post foundation Pharmacists
- Independent Prescriber
- Aseptic Preparation and Dispensing of Medicines (Leeds University) or equivalent if role includes aseptics
- Registered as QC if role includes aseptics
- Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
Experience
Essential criteria
- Specialist knowledge of medicines management systems and process in an integrated NHS
- Knowledge and experience of healthcare
- Specialist knowledge of own field of practice gained through diploma level training and experience
Desirable criteria
- Demonstrate specialist knowledge in more than one field
