Job overview

We are looking for a skilled and experienced individual to take on the role of the Band 8a maternity leave cover for a 12-month period covering both Women and Children's and Medicine. This dual role requires strong leadership, excellent organisational skills and a keen ability to manage complex patient flow processes across both speciality areas.

The successful candidate will oversee clinical pharmacy services to the Women and Children’s and Medical directorate ensuring the highest standards of care, patient experience and operational effectives across medical, maternity, gynaecology, sexual health, neonatal and paediatric services.

Main duties of the job

  • Act as a clinical expert delivering specialist pharmaceutical care and advice.
  • Deliver a clinical pharmacy service to Women and Children’s and Medical wards at GGH.
  • Participate in consultant ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Practice as an independent prescriber within scope of expertise, supporting patient-centred care and timely medication access.
  • Conduct medication reviews and contribute to patient education and discharge planning.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based policies, procedures and prescribing guidelines aligned with national and local frameworks.
  • Monitor and analyse drug expenditure across the Directorates. Identify cost-saving opportunities and promote cost-effective prescribing practices.
  • Contribute to the education and training of pharmacy staff, medical staff, nursing teams and other healthcare professionals within the directorate.
  • Support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including supervision of pharmacy students, trainee pharmacists and foundation pharmacists during clinical rotations.
  • Supervise junior staff in quality improvement and audit activities.
  • Manage outpatient prescriptions for complex conditions including oncology, haematology, inflammatory bowel disease and palliative care.

  • 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers
  • Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Master's degree in Pharmacy
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Postgraduate MSc or Diploma in area of practice or equivalent experience or qualifications
Desirable criteria
  • Accredited supervisor for foundation or post foundation Pharmacists
  • Independent Prescriber
  • Member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • Registered as QC if role includes aseptics
  • Aseptic Preparation and Dispensing of Medicines (Leeds University) or equivalent if role includes aseptics

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of healthcare
  • Specialist knowledge of medicines management systems and process in an integrated NHS
  • Specialist knowledge of own field of practice gained through diploma level training and experience
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate specialist knowledge in more than one field
  • Practice Research Experience
  • Training and education of pharmacy staff and other HCPs
  • Experience of managing change
  • Experience of service improvement
