Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Senior Sister/Charge Nurse to join the nursing team on Padarn Ward, Glangwili General Hospital. We are seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic, innovative nurse with a passion for quality and safety to lead the team. 

Padarn Ward is a 19 bedded ward caring for respiratory and general medical patients. Padarn ward is the respiratory pathway for Hywel Dda University Health Board and supports patients suffering from acute and chronic respiratory conditions.   We provide interventions such as  non invasive ventilation (NIV), high flow oxygen therapy as well as other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

 In this role you will need to demonstrate excellent communication and leadership skills. You must display a positive and professional manner and be open to change, being flexible and confident with the ability to manage a varied workload, as well as supervise, support and develop others in your team.

You will be joining a friendly and innovative multidisciplinary team,  where you will receive a personal induction plan, with ongoing support to meet your individual needs. We offer excellent training opportunities supported by our own learning and development team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide visible, professional nursing leadership developing the core nursing team in the delivery of compassionate, high quality effective patient centred nursing care.

They will be expected to lead by example empowering the team to maintain patient safety, improve patient care/ experience ensuring high standards of nursing care.

Effective communication skills is pivotal to this role, the post holder will develop and maintain good interpersonal relationships with clinical specialists from across nursing and the wider multi-disciplinary team, working in partnership to meet the patient needs. 

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties. 

We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services. 

We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers. 

Our services are provided in: 

  • Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest 
  • Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (Part 1)
  • Current NMC Registration
  • Bachelor degree (or equivalent experience)
  • Pertinent postgraduate diploma (or equivalent development/experience and a willingness to undertake appropriate post graduate level study when in post
  • Bronze IQT
  • Teaching/Coaching qualification (or equivalent experience)
  • Knowledge of legislation pertinent to role
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised management qualification
  • Recognised leadership qualification
  • Experience of leading a team
  • Masters degree in pertinent subject

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven and relevant experience at Band 6
  • Appropriate experience within specialty and able to demonstrate sound knowledge of relevant specialty

  • Proven post-registration experience and evidence of coordinating and managing a team of staff
