Job overview

Help shape the future of lower limb arthroplasty services in South West Wales as a Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics with a specialist interest in complex primary and revision surgery.

The successful candidate will join a supportive department delivering both elective and emergency care across Hywel Dda University Health Board. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the continued development of our arthroplasty service, with a focus on delivering high-quality outcomes, patient safety and evidence-based care.

We are looking for a clinician with advanced surgical expertise in lower limb arthroplasty and experience in managing complex and high-risk cases, including revision surgery. You will play a key role in service development, work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues, and contribute to training, quality improvement and governance activities.

Based at Glangwili General Hospital, the post provides opportunities to help shape specialist arthroplasty pathways in line with Health Board and regional priorities, supporting the delivery of high-quality care for patients across South West Wales.

Main duties of the job

  • Providing expert clinical care in Trauma & Orthopaedics, including the assessment, diagnosis, and surgical management of patients requiring complex primary & revision lower limb arthroplasty procedures.
  • Contributing to the delivery and ongoing development of a high-quality, sustainable arthroplasty service aligned to Health Board objectives and regional orthopaedic transformation programmes.
    Sharing responsibility for the acute management of trauma patients, including participation in a 1 in 12 on-call rota, ensuring safe, timely and consultant-led decision making for emergency admissions.
  • Leading and supporting multidisciplinary working across orthopaedics, including close collaboration with specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and orthogeriatric teams to optimise patient outcomes, particularly for frail and elderly patients.
  • Supporting the development of integrated care pathways across hospital and community settings, ensuring continuity of care & improved patient experience.
  • Contributing to clinical governance, quality improvement and audit activities, ensuring practice meets the highest standards of safety, effectiveness and patient-centred care.
  • Playing an active role in teaching, training and supervision of junior medical staff and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrating leadership in service development, including identifying opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and improved clinical outcomes within arthroplasty & trauma services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The team establishment consists of 14 Consultants, 11 middle grade doctors, 2 Higher Surgical Trainees, 14 CT level doctors, 2 F2’s along with 3.0 wte Trauma Coordinators and a Physician’s Associate.

The successful candidate must be comfortable delivering consultant-led care within a district general hospital setting, including participation in a 1:12 on-call rota providing trauma services. This will involve the assessment and management of acute orthopaedic injuries, ensuring timely, safe and effective care for patients presenting with a wide range of traumatic conditions.

The successful candidate will play a central role in delivering and developing both elective and trauma orthopaedic services, with a particular focus on complex and revision lower limb arthroplasty.

Excellent communication skills, a commitment to high standards of patient care, and the ability to contribute positively to a dynamic clinical environment are essential.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Full registration and a License to Practice with the General Medical Council.
  • On the GMC Specialist Register (including via Portfolio Pathway (CESR)/European Community Rights) or will have CCT due within six months of interview date.
  • Valid Certified Advanced Life Support.
  • Where a sub-specialty interest is required sub-specialty training should be to a level appropriate for UK consultant sub-specialist practice - fellowship or equivalent level experience.

  • Additional Higher qualification(s).
