Job overview

Hywel Dda Radiology is looking to recruit a dynamic and motivated Consultant Radiologist with a special interest in non-vascular interventional radiology.  Applicants will be experienced in general radiology with a special interest and demonstrable competency in undertaking a wide range on non-vascular interventions.  The Health Board offers an excellent opportunity to join a progressive team of 24 consultants and contribute to the on-going development of radiological services within the Hywel Dda University Health Board. Enquiries are also welcomed from those interested in a position less than full time.  Opportunities could also be explored with neighbouring Health Boards for those candidates who have experience in vascular interventions

The successful candidate will be expected to be based at one of our three main sites, either Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthenshire, Withybush Hospital, Pembrokeshire or Prince Philip Hospital in Carmarthenshire, to be decided on appointment.  There will be an expectation to travel and work at the other three main sites, including Bronglais General Hospital, Ceredigion which perform non-vascular interventions.  This expectation will be occasional in line with service need. 

Main duties of the job

This is a new post with the base to be agreed on appointment, joining 24 Consultant Radiologists providing radiology services to the population of Hywel Dda University Health Board, 2.5wte of whom undertake non-vascular interventions. 

The post holder will actively contribute to MDT meetings and be competent in a wide range of non-vascular interventions to include fluoroscopic, ultrasound and CT guided therapeutic and diagnostic techniques such as:

  • Head and neck, lung, liver, omental, retroperitoneal and soft tissue biopsies
  • Temporary and permanent chest and abdominal drain insertions (e.g. cholecystectomy, nephrostomy and DJ ureteric stenting).

The successful candidate will participate in the daytime Duty Radiologist rota covering inpatient scanning which could include cross cover from the base site.   A proportion of the out of hours (OOH) on call is currently outsourced and completed remotely by an online Teleradiology provider.  However, the directorate is currently subject to transformation bringing a proportion of this service in-house.  The successful candidate will participate in the new internal on-call rota.  This will include providing and promoting a flexible approach by contributing to this service completing cross-site reporting and emergency cover for our four main hospital sites where necessary on site and remotely from home.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Full registration and a License to Practice with the General Medical Council.
  • On the GMC Specialist Register (including via Portfolio Pathway (CESR)/European Community Rights) or will have CCT due within six months of interview date.
  • Valid Certified Advanced Life Support.
  • Where a sub-specialty interest is required sub-specialty training should be to a level appropriate for UK consultant sub-specialist practice - fellowship or equivalent level experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Additional Higher qualification(s).

  • Broad based experience within the specialty area.
  • Able to demonstrate core competencies and clinical skills relevant to the post.
