Job overview
We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and suitably qualified HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist who is experienced in Blood Transfusion Science, to apply for the full time Blood Transfusion Manager post within the Blood Sciences Department at Withybush General Hospital, Haverfordwest.
They will be educated to an appropriate MSc level or have equivalent experience with an IBMS Specialist Diploma in Haematology/ Transfusion, or Specialist Certificate in Transfusion Science Practice. They will need to be up to date with developments in the discipline & able to demonstrate relevant CPD in accordance with HCPC. They will have post registration clinical & technical experience at Specialist Biomedical Scientist level, in-depth knowledge of complex instrumentation / laboratory techniques & QA/QC procedures and be able to lead a team.
The post holder will use their professional skills as an active team member providing advice and support to healthcare colleagues to promote the safe and effective use of blood transfusion.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
They will take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the Blood Transfusion section of the Blood Sciences Laboratory, as well as working with the Health Board Blood Transfusion Team and be an active member of the HDUHB Transfusion Leads Committee and Blood Transfusion Group.
Duties will include direction of day-to-day operations of the Blood Transfusion Department, ensuring UKAS and BSQR compliance, compliance with policies and training programmes, and involvement in the resolution of human resource issues. Involved in developing and implementing policies, clinical audit and education of laboratory staff.
The Blood Transfusion Laboratory is currently equipped with the Ortho Vision Swift automated blood grouping system.
The department operates a contractual shift pattern supporting Round the Clock Services, and out of hours working on the Haematology/ Blood Transfusion rota will be part of your role.
The Haematology laboratory is equipped with Siemens ADVIA 2120i Full Blood Count analysers, and Werfen Tops Coagulation analysers.
Effective organisational and communication skills are essential and you must have the ability to work and manage a team efficiently.

The successful post holder will join the team at an exciting time and will become a key stakeholder in the development of the innovative regional network of excellence. The individual will initially be employed by HDUHB until a regional management model is established. The post will then transition into a regional role.

- Post-registration experience in Transfusion with regular experience of working as a Team Leader
- Experience in writing and implementing procedures, policies and guidelines
- Experience and knowledge of meeting ISO15189:2012 and BSQR (2005) requirements
- Experience of quality management systems and their implementation

- Experience of training other staff
- Experience in managing change and developing practice
- Experience in incident investigation and root cause analysis
