Job overview
An exciting opportunity has become available within Public health as part of the health protection team. Working across Hywel Dda Health board to offer and promote vaccination and screening within varied community settings. It is expected that you will be able to travel across the Health Board area to support vaccination and health protection initiatives as well as being able to work evenings and weekends as service demands. A local base will be provided and agreed at interview.
Acting under the direction of registered nurses the Health Care Support Worker is responsible for engaging in a variety of interventions with patients. These range from direct, compensatory nursing care, monitoring physical health and engaging in psychosocial interventions in the wider community and in the patient’s own home/placement.
The Health Care Support Worker will work as part of the Health Protection and Immunisation Team in delivering a safe and effective service in testing for covid-19, outbreak sampling and delivering vaccinations. These activities will be carried out in a variety of settings including vaccination centres, patient’s homes, residential and nursing homes, clinic and hospital settings and ‘pop up’ venues.
The post-holder will work under the supervision of a registered nurse and contribute to the implementation of nursing care as assessed by the registered nurse.
Main duties of the job
Duties include:
Administer vaccines in accordance with training and local and national protocols, procedures and standards.
Carry out a range of clinical procedures e.g. throat and / or nasal swabbing for covid-19, point of care testing for covid-19, renewal of dressings, venepuncture and sending of specimens, recording of vital signs, administration of medications.
Wear adequate PPE equipment in line with national guidelines. Conduct hand hygiene before and after each vaccination.
Undertake a range of clinical and clerical activities as delegated by the registered nurse.
Respond to and raise issues or concerns with the registered nurse on complications or emergency situations.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Level 3 qualification in a health care related subject Or Equivalent experience and can evidence work based competency demonstrating theoretical knowledge, and the ability to undertake clinical care duties relevant for the role which is gained through experience and worked based training/short courses.
- Knowledge of the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers in Wales and All Wales Delegation Guidelines (HEIW).
- Understanding of the Confidentiality and Data Protection Act and maintains confidentiality and trust
- Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures within a healthcare setting for example the principles of Safeguarding adults/children to keep patients within their care safe, and confidentiality for example General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).
- Has a working knowledge of IT systems including Microsoft Office, Excel, Welsh Clinical Portal and ESR.
Experience

- Experience of working within a relevant heath or social care environment, providing direct patient care
- Experience in providing care and undertaking clinical observations
- Venepuncture skills
- Immunisation delivery experience

- Previous hospital experience
- Experience of a range of clinical skills including administering vaccines
