Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our elective theatre department.
This is an exciting opportunity for a hard working, friendly and conscientious worker to fill the position of theatre department orderly in the main theatre department here in Prince Philip Hospital.
Prior operating theatre or healthcare experience theatre would be advantageous, but full training will be provided with a supernumerary period and complete induction programme for the successful candidate.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Part and full time hours available.
Main duties of the job
The duties of Operating Department Orderlies working in a busy environment are:
- Assisting the surgical team in transferring of patients using prescribed manual handling techniques.
- Escorting patients to the theatre unit prior to surgery.
- Escorting post surgical patients to the surgical ward with the support of trained staff.
- Cleaning the theatre environment between patient surgical procedures.
- Assisting with the practical daily operating theatre tasks such as the collection and handover of medications, notes, equipment and other supplies.
- Assisting with the general upkeep of the operating department and its storage areas.
- Restocking the linen trolley and staff scrub suits as required.
- Supporting the theatre practitioner in positioning patients on operating table.
- Assisting the theatre team by supporting patient limbs during surgical preparation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We are a busy and friendly department which covers elective orthopaedics, colorectal, urology, general surgery and breast specialties on elective surgical lists Monday through Friday.
This role consists of varied and diverse manual handling tasks involving both patients and supplies, and the candidate will be required to spend long periods on their feet, and be capable of working both independently and under the direction of trained healthcare staff.
Strong communication skills are essential and the importance of the theatre orderly role in liaising with colleagues, task prioritisation and assisting our patients is crucial to ensuring we maintain a safe, welcoming and friendly environment for our patients.
