Job overview

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Community Mental Health Team based at South Pembrokeshire Hospital in Pembroke Dock. This role provides the chance to work in a supportive and forward‑looking environment, delivering high‑quality care to adults in both community and inpatient settings.

You will play a central role in shaping the future of mental health care in Pembrokeshire, working closely with a passionate multidisciplinary team. Together, you will provide compassionate, evidence‑based care to meet the needs of our local population. As part of the role, you will contribute to teaching and training, supporting medical students and junior staff, while also engaging in audit, research, and service development. With strong links to Swansea and Cardiff Universities, there are excellent opportunities to develop sub‑specialty interests and to participate in innovative research projects that improve patient outcomes.

Main duties of the job

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will provide clinical leadership across community and inpatient services, helping to shape the future of adult mental health care in Pembrokeshire. Working closely with a dedicated multidisciplinary team, you will ensure services are compassionate, evidence‑based, and responsive to the needs of our local population.

Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Delivering high‑quality clinical care in Adult General Psychiatry
  • Leading and supporting the multidisciplinary team
  • Contributing to teaching, training, and research activities
  • Applying expertise in assessment, treatment, and community management
  • Supporting the development of medical students, junior doctors, and wider staff
  • Participating in CPD, audit, and service improvement initiatives

Working for our organisation

Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.

We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services.

We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.

Our services are provided in:

  • Four main hospitals: Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest
  • Five community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire
  • Two integrated care centres: Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings
  • 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Full registration and a License to Practice with the General Medical Council.
  • On the GMC Specialist Register (including via Portfolio Pathway (CESR)/European Community Rights) or will have CCT due within six months of interview date.
  • Valid Certified Advanced Life Support.
  • Where a sub-specialty interest is required sub-specialty training should be to a level appropriate for UK consultant sub-specialist practice - fellowship or equivalent level experience.
  • Section 12 Approval.
  • AC Approved Clinician Status.
Desirable criteria
  • Additional Higher qualification(s).

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad based experience within the specialty area.
  • Able to demonstrate core competencies and clinical skills relevant to the post.
  • Experience of leading a team.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience working in the UK or NHS.

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the role of Clinical Governance.
  • Participation in clinical audit (or quality improvement project) and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice.
