Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a permanent post as a Specialist Learning Disability Physiotherapy Support Worker to join a friendly and motivated physiotherapy service, based at the Pembrokeshire Community Team for Learning Disabilities. The post holder will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team under the direction of a specialist physiotherapist.

The post holder will be supported by the physiotherapist within the team to independently carry out individual and group therapy sessions in a variety of different settings.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be part of the Hywel Dda University Health Board Learning Disabilities (LD) Physiotherapy service and assist the qualified physiotherapist in the overall physiotherapy management of clients with learning disabilities in collaboration with carers and other agencies.

Some experience of working with people with a learning disability and knowledge of the role of the physiotherapist is essential. There will be expectation to undertake the Level 4 Physiotherapy Diploma for Health Care Support Workers and additional opportunities for further training within the role will be offered.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Hywel Dda University Health Board is the planner and provider of NHS healthcare services for people in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and its bordering counties. Our 11,000 members of staff provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services for around 384,000 people across a quarter of the landmass of Wales. Four main hospitals: Bronglais General in Aberystwyth, Glangwili General in Carmarthen, Prince Philip in Llanelli and Withybush General in Haverfordwest;

Seven community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron, Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire Hospital Health and Social Care Resource Centre in Pembrokeshire;

Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.

Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3
  • Level 4 equivalent experience through relevant additional courses/ experience to Diploma Level to support clinical work
  • Has a significant knowledge and experience of the model of Physiotherapy and able to support therapeutic intervention with arms length supervision e.g. lone working
  • Some knowledge of physiotherapy skills and programmes
  • To use adapted manual handing techniques to incrementally improve client capacity to be independent.
  • Demonstrates developed manual handling and manipulation skills in order to influence muscle tone, posture and movement.
  • Demonstrates developed visual acuity and perceptual skills through the ability to determine anomalies in a client’s cognitive, perceptual, neurological and biomechanical performance

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience working with people with a learning disability or broad range of experience as a support worker in therapy service or associated field or specialist training and experience
  • Broad range of experience as a support worker in therapy service or associated field
Desirable criteria
  • Previous work experience as a physiotherapy support worker working with people with learning disabilities
  • Experience of working as part of a multi disciplinary team
  • Supervision of staff
  • Additional clinical or health care related experience
  • Experience of working with groups of patients
  • Experience of audit
